In a pivotal matchup between OIA Division I undefeateds that came down to the wire, thirteenth ranked Waipahu came away with the win over number nine Aiea, 20-14.

"It was a big win, it shows how much improvement we've had and it puts us up there for a higher seed for the playoffs," said Uiliata of the win over Na Alii.

An uncharacteristically low scoring game between two squads averaging 30 points per contest, the Maruaders got the break when it needed it most, capitalizing on a late Na Alii miscue with just 1:23 left in the contest that gave Waipahu the ball back at the Aiea 15.

Four plays later, Joshua Manu found Liatama Uiliata for the go-ahead score with just 13 seconds left. It was the 12 reception of the evening for Uiliata and marked the third time this season the wideout eclipsed the double digit mark in catches.

"It was really just put it up, its either me or nobody," said Uiliata of the catch. "We didn't get it the first time, but luckily we got it the next play."

On the ensuing kickoff, the Marauders faithful in attendance held their collective breath as Germino Ulgaran took the ball from about three yard line and broke free for what at first looked like a potential result flipping return for touchdown. He eventually was forced out of bounds at the Waipahu 25 with just 0.5 seconds left, giving Aiea one last gasp at the win.

As he was for much of the evening, that play saw Noah Spencer pressured and chased out of the pocket, where he scrambled beyond the line of scrimmage and was eventually tackled after a short gain to end it.

"We could have done better, we made little mistakes but the thing I love was the we bounced back," said Faapaia Fualema of the Maurauders defense.

Ulgaran made an impact in the passing game as well, catching a 37 yard pass for a score on an option toss from Rico Figueroa that gave Aiea an first half advantage that held until the 2:36 mark of the third, when Anieli Teleaai, who did not log a carry in the entire first half, punched in a score for Waipahu from three yards out.

Up by just a point heading into the fourth quarter, Aiea looked primed to run some time off the clock via the ground game, but instead got the next best thing, a scoring scamper courtesy of Kaimana Lale-Saole, who broke free for a 60 yard score to extend the Na Alii lead to eight. Lale Saole's 14 carries topped all ball carriers.

Teleaai was a second-half workhorse, toting the rock 17 times for a game-high 112 yards. His backfield mate Braeden Togafau carried the ball 13 times for just 30 yards, but bulldozed in a score from a yard out to get Waipahu to within two at the 9:04 mark of the third.

"We didn't really use him, I guess he was underrated, but now I think it's going to be different," said Uiliata of Teleaai, who logged just six carries for 12 yards against Farringtion on Sept. 9 in his only other appearance this season. "He's got a bright future ahead of him."

Seeking the tie, Waipahu went for two on the conversion, and turned to Romeo Tagata, who kept the pile moving near the goal line and eventually crossed the plane to tie the game at the 9:04 mark of the fourth.

Aiea did all it could to stay in it, including a field goal block by Elijah Nahoopii-Makakona that kept Waipahu off the scoreboard to end the half, a blocked PAT by Aizik Mahuka that kept Na Alii narrowly in front in the third, as well as a big stop on fourth down by Makoa Ah Mook Sang to thwart another deep Marauders drive.

Both teams were hampered by injuries, both before and during the contest, but two key ones included an inactive Ezekiel Olie, starting quarterback for Aiea, and Romeo Simpson, who went down the play before the eventual game winner. The rangey defensive back had logged five pass break ups before having to leave the contest.

Waipahu hosts Roosevelt on Sept. 23, while Aiea faces off with Radford back at Velasco Stadium after a bye week on Sept. 30.
