MAKIKI—In a tale of two halves, Roosevelt held off a second half charge from Radford to win, 31-24, in a Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I contest at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Friday.

After smarting from a 57-7 loss to Aiea on Aug. 27, the Rough Riders get back into the win column and improved to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the OIA.

"I felt like we broke down against Aiea, not really broke down but everyone just hung their heads. I felt like this one, in the second half we were sloppy, but we got everyone together to keep their heads up and execute," Roosevelt quarterback Kayman Lewis said.

The Rams (1-3 overall, 0-2 OIA) took a 24-23 lead with 2:54 left in the fourth quarter after Kalob Victorino-Avilla's 3-yard keeper, but the two-point conversion pass failed.

Keanu Bezares returned the ensuing kick off deep into Ram territory and tacked on extra yardage after a facemark penalty.

"We're scoring, we need to score to win," Lewis said of the mindset on the drive. "That was a clutch play by our kick off return."

"Special teams is really important. That definitely got us good field position and Silas bulldozed it in," Kamuela Kaaihue said.

Silas Kekahuna, who finished with 75 yards on eight carries, found an opening on the left side of the field and ran it in from 15 yards out with 2:22 remaining on the clock.

"It was adrenaline rushing through my blood. I saw that open side on the left and hit it as hard as I could. Thank you to my o-line, Kayman (Lewis) for blocking, they set it up for me," Kekahuna said of the winning touchdown.

Radford started on their own 7 but could not get going after Roosevelt clamped down. Kaaihue came off the edge to sack Victorino-Avilla to make it fourth-and-11 and on the next play, Kainalu Davis snuffed out the screen to Michael Hayslett to force a turnover on downs.

Roosevelt was able to take a knee to run out the remainder of the clock.

"I knew they had to go for a longer pass so I had some time do work on my outside moves. I know he (Victorino-Avilla) whenever he moves up in the pocket, he likes to roll out immediately and I got the right angle," Kaaihue said of the crucial sack.

A pitch and lateral to Kaaihue set up a would-be touchdown pass to Jayden Montgomery-Gaopoa, but it was ruled he fumbled it out of the end zone for a touch back.

"All week we were emphasizing our receivers blocking down on the DBs. I think we executed it alright today. We didn't do so good on that. It would've been a bigger score if our touchdowns counted," Kaaihue said, referring to some touchdowns being called back.

Lewis threw for 340 yards on 18-of-31 passing, a pick, and three touchdown passes to three different receivers to bounce back.

"After my first hit, I got comfortable. The middle kinda covered, but right outside were the open spots. Our running game and o-line were doing good," Lewis said.

Kaaihue hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Lewis for the Rough Riders' first points and Kaaihue had to attempt the PAT kick after Journey DePeralta was sent off the field for an equipment issue. The kick was short, but Roosevelt led, 6-0.

Kaaihue finished with six catches for 111 receiving yards and was 1 for 2 for 47 yards passing.

Lewis' second touchdown pass was a 72 yarder to Montgomery-Gaopoa, who finished with 174 yards on five catches, and Deperalta made it, 13-0 with 1:01 left in the first quarter.

The Rams were able to get down to the Roosevelt 4, but a back snap and a sack set them back and eventually turned it over on downs.

Davis caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Lewis and DePeralta added a 26-yard field goal for a 23-0 halftime lead.

"It had to do with the mentality. Everybody wanted to win in the first half and we were pushing, pushing, pushing," Kaaihue said.

Victorino-Avilla, who had 309 yards on 23-of-40 passing, connected with Joel Gillies down to the Roosevelt 3, but the Rams lost yardage. Elijah Falaniko ran it in from 8 yards out for Radford's first points, but the kick failed.

Victorino-Avilla found 6-foot-3 Roch Schaefer near the back of the end zone with 2:15 left in the third quarter, but Harrison Hoskins' kick was no good.

Hayslett took a pass from Victorino-Avilla for a 56-yard touchdown to get Radford within five at the 8:48 mark. The two-point try failed as Roosevelt still led, 23-18.

Hayslett led the way with 144 rushing yards on 19 carries and 110 receiving yards on four receptions.

The Rams had a chance to take the lead off of Jacob Sullivan's interception, but Schaefer could not quite haul in a pass from Victorino-Avilla in the end zone.

Radford kept the drive alive after Victorino-Avilla completed a pass to Olijah Gomez on fourth down to move the chains and Hayslett rushed to the Roosevelt 3 to set up Victorino-Avilla's rushing touchdown for Radford's short-lived lead.

Roosevelt hosts Castle (0-4 overall, 0-1 OIA) on homecoming night on Sept. 16 while Radford goes to Farrington (2-3 overall, 0-1 OIA) on the same night.
