Iolani baseball • #10 RHP Senior
Zacary Tenn delivered just what the doctor ordered for the Iolani baseball team last week.
The right-handed pitcher turned in a complete game three-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks in last Tuesday's 3-1 win for the Raiders over Punahou.
"We kind of needed that one for our momentum and everything else and he stepped up and embraced the opportunity," Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said of Tenn, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior.
As he has all season, Tenn lived in the strike zone against the Buffanblu. He threw 63 of his 78 total pitches for strikes. Of the 26 batters Tenn faced — five more than the minimum — he registered first-pitch strikes to all but two of them.
"He's got really good command and he knows how to pitch — he throws the ball where he wants to throw it — and he knows how to get outs," said Miyahira, who added that of Tenn's four pitches in his repertoire, the change-up is by far his best.
"He's got an excellent change-up," Miyahira said. "Just about every strikeout he had against Punahou was off of the change-up,"
In addition to the off-speed pitch, Tenn also throws a fastball, curveball and a slider.
"He's worked on all of them, but the change-up keeps progressing. He's not satisfied with it just being where it is and he's trying to perfect everything, actually," Miyahira said.
Tenn's outing against the Buffanblu, however, got off to a bit of a shaky staff.
The visitors recorded back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the first inning. The lead baserunner ended up coming around to score on a passed ball.
It was the only run Punahou managed to push across all afternoon — and an unearned one.
"He threw twenty-two pitches in the first inning, but he just competes and he just finds a way," Miyahira said of the University of Washington signee.
Tenn is one of three local products headed to Seattle next fall, along with Kamehameha catcher Beau Sylvester and Saint Louis shortstop Aiva Arquette.
"In Zac they're getting a competitor, a bulldog and he's very mature for his age," Miyahira said.
Tenn's preparations in the lead-up to a start indicate the level of maturity that he conducts himself with.
"He's pretty locked in. I mean, he goes over the lineups, the batters — we kind of go over it as a coaching staff, how we play our defense, how we play the batters, stuff like that — so I mean, he's got a good sense of the guys around the league because he's been around for so long, but he's pretty locked in the day before in his preparation and the day of. He's kind of no fun to be around those days, (but) all the other days he's loose and likes to have fun," Miyahira explained.
Tenn was certainly locked in the rest of the way against Punahou. He retired the side in order in both the top of the second and third innings. Tenn stranded a pair of Buffanblu baserunners in the fourth and another in the fifth. He needed just seven pitches in a 1-2-3 sixth inning and struck out the first two batters in the seventh before he got the final out on a pop-up to left field.
"That first inning didn't faze him," Miyahira said. "He was gonna go out there and do his job; He doesn't get rattled."
Not only did Tenn go without walking a batter, he only reached two three-ball counts against Buffanblu hitters.
On the year, he has tallied 21 strikeouts against just one walk and has an earned run average of 0.35, tops among all Interscholastic League of Honolulu pitchers.
"It's safe to say that in every game he pitches, I feel like we're in every game at the very least," Miyahira said. "Every start he kind of sets the tone and I think it's been infectious with our other guys on our pitching staff — his brother (Kaleb), Trent Ihle — he's been a good role model for our guys on how to prepare, having the right mindset, how to pitch, how to attack batters; He's been a huge mentor for these other guys."
Tenn, who also plays basketball for the school during the winter season, has been on the varsity team since he was a freshman and is the only four-year letterman for the Raiders this season.
"I think he's very important. He's been around the longest so he knows what we expect out of the players as far as attitude and effort," Miyahira said. "And that becomes infectious and contagious. He just has a lot of intangibles."
Despite Tenn's achievements on the mound, Miyahira made sure to mention the off-the-field attributes of the right-hander.
"No matter how good of a pitcher he is, he's a better person and a better teammate, I think that's what makes him special," he said. "For all his pitching accolades, at the end of the day he's a great person and those are the things that make him special and I'm truly gonna miss him."
Iolani moved into this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric power rankings at the No. 10 spot.
Tenn allowed two runs on six hits against top-ranked Saint Louis Tuesday night, but Iolani lost the game by a score of 2-0. Tenn struck out six Crusaders and walked three; he threw 59 of his 87 total pitches for strikes.
The Raiders (3-5) will look to get back into the win column Thursday, when they take on No. 5 Maryknoll at 3:30 p.m. at Ala Wai Community Park.

Waipahu softball • #8 1B/3B Senior
After a couple of years of heartbreak, now is Logan Chun's time to shine.
And is she ever.
The senior has been on a tear this season for the Waipahu softball team with a gaudy .563 batting average and a league-best dozen runs batted in, but last week was one to remember for Chun, to be sure.
In three games for the Marauders — all of them wins — Chun combined to bat 8 for 8 with eight RBI and three runs scored. All but two of her hits went for extra bases, including four doubles, a triple and one home run.
"I think a lot of it was she set the table in those big games," Marauders coach Devin Fukunaga said of Chun, a 5-foot-4 corner infielder.
Against Kahuku last Tuesday, Chun doubled, homered and drove in three runs to help Waipahu coast to a 10-0 win in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. That performance came just three days after she went 0 for 3 at the plate in the Marauders' 7-1 loss to Nanakuli.
"I mean, nobody wants to lose, but I think that the Nanakuli loss was a good wake-up call," Fukunaga said.
He pointed out that after the loss to the Golden Hawks, he changed up the batting lineup a bit, including shifting Chun from the clean-up spot to the sixth hole.
"I think what really impressed me was even though I shuffled the lineup, she kept a positive attitude and she did her job and not only did her job, but excelled in her job," Fukunaga said.
Two days after the win over the Red Raiders, Chun turned in another 2-for-2 day at the dish in a 7-2 win over Aiea. She tripled, drove in three runs and also stole a base in the victory.
"Aiea took the JV championship so I know they have a great young team and that they were gonna be very competitive, so we went into that game knowing that we had to bring our A-game because if we don't bring our A-game, it's gonna be a long day," Fukunaga said.
Chun and leadoff batter, Kristy Kitabayashi, accounted for four of Waipahu's five base hits against Na Alii, but pitcher Taylor Fukunaga fanned nine batters and scattered four hits and three walks to record the win in the circle.
Following Thursday's win over Aiea, Waipahu went on the road to visit another postseason contender in Waialua. Just as they did against Kahuku, the Marauders run-ruled the Bulldogs by a score of 16-6 (5 inn.). Chun collected four hits in as many at-bats, including three doubles; She drove in a pair of runs and scored two others.
"We knew Waialua was going to be a battle and we might have run-ruled them, but that score reflects nothing on them; Waialua is a great team," Devin Fukunaga said.
The trio of victories pushed the Marauders to 5-1 in the 10-team Division II standings of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
"It was huge," Fukunaga said of the week.
"In fact, I was just talking to our girls (Monday) about how proud I am of them. We go into every game with the same mindset — be one-and-oh after every game — and to come out three-and-oh after that week was tremendous for us and even though there's been individual success, it's been great team wins and we're just hoping that momentum builds and it just keeps going," he said.
Fukunaga is especially happy for Chun, who has been on the varsity team for three-plus years, but did not play as a freshman due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in the preseason.
"She definitely would have been a four-year starter but her freshman year, in the preseason, in the Mililani tournament, she tore her ACL and MCL," Fukunaga recalled. "Then her sophomore year we played three games and she was just gonna get cleared and then COVID hit, so she lost her sophomore year and then during COVID she was jogging around her neighborhood and injured her ACL and MCL again and so she had to get surgery again but she came back and played last year, but didn't get an official OIA at-bat until her senior year."
Chun has traversed quite the arduous path back from injury, but is reaping the fruits of her labor this spring, much to the delight of her coach.
"I'm super proud of her because anybody could have just thrown in the towel, but she kept striving, kept working to get better and she never once complained or felt sorry for herself. She always just worked to rehab to get better and I'm super proud of her that she persevered through this and didn't give up and now she's getting the success from that that she worked for," Fukunaga said.
The right-handed Chun has been holding down third base for the Marauders, but has also spent time at first base. Fukunaga said that her offensive prowess reminds him of former Leilehua catcher/first baseman Gianna "Gigi" Araki, a former All-Hawaii Position Player of the Year.
"Logan has all the tools in the world. She's strong, she has a great swing and she has power —I tell everybody that Logan reminds me of Gigi with her power — but I think she changed the mindset of being such a power free-swinger to being a hitter and her mental approach is really helping her see the ball better and make better pitch selections and I think that's been attributing to her success," Fukunaga said.
Chun and the Marauders (5-1) return to action Thursday, when they host Radford at 3 p.m.
