Parker Grant

Maryknoll baseball  •   #21  U/P  Senior

Calm, yet confident. Parker Grant is that, indeed.

Grant, a Maryknoll senior and fourth-year member of the school's baseball team, made use of that quiet confidence last Tuesday in a 3-0 win at Iolani. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander pitcher threw a gem of an outing; In 6 1/3 innings of work, Grant scattered four hits and five walks with eight strikeouts.

Spartans coach Alakai Aglipay said he was most impressed by how focused Grant was in his first start of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season.

"I think over the years he felt like he always had to do everything by himself, but just to see him in the moment and to see him locked in all seven innings and each time he would come off the mound he would encourage his guys. He was picking up his teammates, so it was exciting to see how Parker was performing that day," Aglipay said.

There was never a question of Grant's ability. After all, he is signed to play collegiately at the University of Kansas next year.

"He's a workhorse. I think there's a very strong, confident presence when he's on the mound and so he's gonna throw a lot of strikes and he's gonna force you to swing the bat (because) he has about four different pitches and each pitch he has lots of control with," Aglipay described.

Grant, the winning pitcher, threw 105 total pitches, 65 of them for strikes. He retired 19 of the 28 batters he faced before he gave to Cade Hedani, who recorded the final two outs and got the save.

Aglipay said that Grant battled with some control issues early on in the game, but was able to settle in nicely and eat some innings for the Spartans.

"Yeah, definitely. I mean, he threw a lot more pitches than the opposing pitcher and I think it's his first long outing, so that's kind of expected to see, so his next performance and as the season goes on that'll get cleaned up, especially toward playoff time, but he puts in the work so I have all the confidence in him to perform well."

Grant's teammates spotted him an early lead with a single run in the top of the first inning, on Matthew Miura's RBI-sacrifice fly to score Nicolas Low. Grant gave up a double in the bottom half of the inning, but stranded the baserunner; He did the same in the second inning, when he issued a pair of walks but got the third out on a comebacker to escape the jam unscathed.

Maryknoll added a couple of runs in the top of the fourth. It had three hits in the inning, including a single by Grant – whose courtesy runner, Blade Kaululaau, came around to score the second Spartans' run of the frame.

However, Grant got into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the fourth. After he struck out Cole Yonamine for the first out, Grant walked Brock Makishima on four pitches. He then issued another base-on-balls to Makani Tanaka and allowed a single by Cole Ide to load the bases full of Raiders. The next batter, Rylen Miyasaki, swung at the first pitch from Grant and popped up to second baseman Noah Bernal for the second out. Grant then got leadoff batter Kaimana Lau Kong to do the same for the third out to keep Iolani off the board.

"Those are momentum changers for any game, so to keep the momentum on our side, that was big and he's a big-game pitcher so he's been in those situations and to see him get out of it, of course it builds confidence with the team, but it's one of those things you kind of expect him to get out of it because he's been there so many times and he's gotten out of it in multiple outings," Aglipay said.

Grant set the Raiders down in order in the fifth and sixth innings and got the first out of the bottom of the seventh before he walked the next batter. After an infield error allowed Lau Kong to reach base and brought the potential tying run to the plate in Jonah Velasco, Grant reached the maximum pitch count and was lifted for Hedani, who struck out the only two batters he faced to end the game.

Aglipay said that when he checked in with Grant between innings, the pitcher expressed a strong desire to finish out the game himself.

"He really wanted to. We asked him, I think in the sixth and seventh inning, when his pitch count was starting to go up, how he was doing and he just kept telling us he wanted it. Hopefully we never get to that point of pitching to the max, but I think for him, he's a competitor and as a competitor he just wanted to finish that game," Aglipay said.

The win lifted the Spartans to 3-0 in the ILH Division I standings and set-up a big showdown against fellow-unbeaten, Saint Louis, two days later.

"All the credit to the boys, they put in the work," Aglipay said. "And they're still young and I think that's the biggest key, is that these guys are young, they're learning from each other, learning how to play together, how to trust each other, so winning against Iolani – another great team – I think that just builds these guys' confidence that they can compete with anybody as they go through the season and Parker is the guy to rally behind."

That's not to say, however, that Grant is always leading from the front.

"I think his leadership is more lead by example," Aglipay said. "He's not a very talkative person, but he does everything that the coaches ask for and he's consistent with that. In the moments, especially games, he'll communicate with his teammates, but in practice he's definitely a lead-by-example kind of guy. He takes every rep serious and because he doesn't talk much he just goes out there and gives us his best effort in practices and games and the boys feed off his example."

Grant is one of six seniors on Aglipay's squad and one of three fourth-year varsity players (Noah Hata and Miura being the other two). When Grant isn't pitching, he typically plays second base instead – although he was the team's shortstop the past two years.

Wherever he is on the diamond, Grant brings an aura of positivity for the young Spartans, who have four freshmen, four sophomores and six juniors in addition to their half-dozen 12th graders.

"It's definitely a calming presence, especially when he's on the mound," Aglipay said. "It's a mix of calming and then the players feeling a lot more confidence when he's on the field. A lot of the younger guys just look to him for that experience and he's a guy who puts in the work and the kids really do look up to that."

Grant's other sport is basketball. His father, Kelly, is the longtime coach of the boys basketball team and guided the Spartans to back-to-back Division I state championships in 2019 and 2020. Parker was a member of both teams.

"I think the experience that he's gained from basketball, he knows the expectation of how to perform, how to practice, how to execute – especially because his dad is coach Kelly – but I think his experience in basketball, being on two state championship teams, he knows what it takes to win and that experience holds value when it comes to another sport because he's been in those big moments in those big games and the spotlight won't be too big for him," Aglipay expressed.

Maryknoll went on to play Saint Louis to a 2-2 tie after the game was called after eight innings due to darkness. Two days later, it went into extra innings again, but came up short in a 4-2 loss to Mid-Pacific.

The Spartans (3-1-1), who are fifth in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, are tied for second place in the seven-team ILH D1 standings entering Tuesday night's game against first-place Kamehameha (5-0) at Hans L'Orange Park. They play Punahou (3-2)  at Mike Goeas Field on Thursday, before they wrap up the week against Damien (0-5) Saturday at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.

Puakea Milbourne

Kapolei softball  •   #2  INF  Senior

First-game jitters, there were not for Puakea Milbourne.

The Kapolei third baseman kicked off her senior season of softball with a solid day of production at the plate in her team's come-from-behind 10-8 win at Mililani Friday afternoon.

Milbourne, who hits second in the Hurricanes' lineup, batted 3 for 4 with a pair of two-run home runs. She accounted for four runs batted in and scored three times in the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season opener for both teams.

Kapolei fifth-year coach Keoke Behic wasn't surprised by Milbourne's prolific performance.

"Lately she's been seeing the ball really, really well and it started at the tail end of our winter season. She kind of struggled in the beginning of winter and then she just – my goodness – I think she just started seeing the ball really well and it started to look like beach balls and she's continued to see the ball well and I think for her, it's trying not to do too much," Behic explained.

Behic certainly knows Milbourne well; She has been on the ‘Canes varsity squad since she was a freshman. While her role on the team has evolved over the years, Milbourne's work ethic has never wavered.

"She never really asked to be the leader, but that's what she just exudes and she does it by example. She comes to practice early and starts taking out equipment without being asked, she would direct other players on what needed to be done based on my plan that's on the practice board," said Behic, who also described a softer, nurturing side to Milbourne.

"Whenever we have young kids around – they would come to our weekend practices and do like, a clinic, she would take them under her wing. She just does a lot of the little things correct, so she definitely has a lot of strengths in that area, but she's also not afraid to go to you and say ‘That's not how to do things. You have to do it this way,' " he said. "She definitely doesn't hold her opinion to herself and I think it can be a good thing and a bad thing, but I think people know when she means business."

Behic let Milbourne and her fellow team captain, Jerzie Liana, voice their opinion during a critical juncture of Friday's game against the Trojans.

"I called timeout to go to the mound and usually a coach would be the one to say, "Eh, you know what, based upon what this person did, this is how we're gonna get her out,' but the kids all said I think we should get (her) out like this, so they were both very integral in the process and after I thought about it that that's pretty cool that we can collaborate to come up with game plans and how to attack folks," Behic said.

Milbourne and Liana – who bats leadoff and starts at shortstop when she's not in the pitching circle – were selected as captains unanimously in a vote of players and coaches.

"They're at that maturity level where they're taking their game to another place, not just ‘I'm gonna listen to the coach and do what the coach says, but I'm also gonna be part of the feedback,' that's all part of it and you hope, as a coach, that you are able to give to them and help their IQ because ultimately all of these kids will go somewhere else and if you just hand-feed them, they'll never be their own person, so I think that's what makes them special and that's why the two of them were voted outright by the players and coaches as captains," Behic said.

The duo set the table for the ‘Canes Friday; they combined to go 6 of 8 at the plate and scored six runs between them. Liana, a junior, was also the pitcher of record after she pitched 6 2/3 innings in relief to get the win.

After Liana doubled to lead off the game, Milbourne homered on a line drive over the fence in left field on the first pitch she saw from Mililani starting pitcher Dani Monroe to give her team an early 2-0 lead.

However, the Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the second. Another three-spot in the third put them ahead, 8-2. The score held after four complete, but Kapolei chipped away in the top of the fifth, when it sent seven batters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits, including a single by Milbourne.

The Hurricanes plated three more runs – all of them with two outs – in the sixth inning on a pair of homers. They cut the Mililani lead to 8-7 on a Maka Flores solo shot and two batters later, pulled ahead on a two-run blast by Milbourne to straightaway center.

"Dead center," Behic confirmed. "I knew it was gone off the bat, for sure."

Milbourne's second two-run homer of the game came after she fouled off the first two pitches of the at-bat.

"She stuck to the approach. With no balls, two strikes she stuck with the plan. We have a two-strike approach and she did that; she shortened up and put the barrel on the ball and is strong enough to put the ball over," Behic said.

The longtime coach, with stints at Pearl City, Campbell and Kapolei, described what sets Milbourne apart from a lot of other players.

"She's strong and I think what makes her special is she has gifted hands. When you talk about baseball and softball, some folks just have that ability to have good hands. Sometimes her swing might not be super pretty, but because she has good hands she makes up for a lot of it and her instincts are good and her softball IQ is tremendous," Behic said.

Milbourne's softball IQ also translates to her defense at the hot corner.

"She provides a lot of energy and stability. I think over there at third base, or just on the field in general, you need that person to always be communicating and one thing that I appreciate this year is usually I would call out our bunt coverages and maybe our special plays, but she actually kind of does it already that I don't have to do it, which is pretty cool seeing the growth in an individual player and I can say that with Jerzie as well," Behic added.

He noted that even when Milbourne's bat isn't pumping out base hits, her hustle and positivity never slumps – as her future coach at Oregon Tech University saw first-hand last summer.

"He saw all Puakea's higlights and then he came and watched her play for my club team in Oregon and she didn't have her best tournament," Behic recalled.

"She wasn't making the highlight reel, but for whatever reason people get into slumps and they don't have their best days, but what he saw were the intangibles. He saw when she hits a weak ground ball to the infield, he saw her run one-hundred percent the hardest and if she gets out, she doesn't sulk when she goes in the dugout." He went on, "She's always positive, always cheering her teammates, never once hung her head and that's what earned her that scholarship: being the best teammate without being the best herself and that right there is the epitome of Puakea."

Milbourne continued her hot start to the season Tuesday afternoon. She swatted two more home runs and had seven RBIs in an 18-2 win in five innings over Leilehua.

The Hurricanes (2-0) opened at No. 2 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings and are the only remaining undefeated team in the OIA's D1 West. They will host No. 4 Campbell (1-1) Saturday at 10 a.m.
