KALAEPOHAKU—Hayden Bayudan dropped 18 points and Aiva Arquette added 11 to help top-ranked Saint Louis pull away from No. 2 Iolani, 47-39, at the Clarence T. C. Ching Athletic Center Tuesday night.

The Crusaders improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings and pushed the lead to 10 twice with under a minute to go.

"It was a tough game and happy we came away with a win. Just trying to work through some things and lot of these things are like preseason-type games when you're working through stuff, but it was a good effort by both teams and we were fortunate," Saint Louis coach Dan Hale said.

"That's a big win for us as a team. It was a great team-win for us and a good stepping stone for us," Arquette added.

Bayudan shot 5 for 6 from the free throw line to close it out the final minute and finished 6 for 8 for the game.

"We're a team with a lot of seniors. I understand what it takes and depend on my hard work my faith and all the sacrifice I put into my craft and I think that's where my confidence comes from," Bayudan said.

"We practice for these types of situations and it paid off," Arquette said.

JJ Mandaquit scored a team-high 18 points and hit three 3-pointers as the Raiders dropped to 1-1.

"It's a tough guy to cool off a guy like that because he distributes so much. He's a tough player for how old he is," Hale said.

The Crusaders built a 11-2 lead to open the first quarter powered by Arquette's nine points until the Raiders closed it out on a 9-2 run and trailed, 13-11 following Casey Lyons' shot going into the second quarter.

Mandaquit tied the game at 13 to open the second quarter and AJ Bianco, backed down his defender for two and Bayudan added a reverse layup in transition to cap a 7-0 run and forced a timeout from Iolani.

"We really struggled with the details today, this is a young group and this is no excuse, but at the same time they need to play and get on the court with each other. It's disappointing not to get a win tonight but it's a long season and we have to continue improve everyday, that's all we can do with this group and move forward," Iolani coach Ryan Hirata said.

Bianco missed time while practicing for the upcoming Polynesian Bowl but chipped in six points and provided a physical presence on both ends of the floor.

"His presence alone is so much for us," Bayudan said.

"He did well, it's great having him back on the court. Having a big body in there and it helps us out with rebounds. It's great seeing him out here," Arquette added.

Iolani got within four off a 3-pointer from Akila Indalecio but the Crusaders held a six-point lead and extended it following Saint Louis' only 3-pointer of the game from Shoncin Revuelto and Pupu Sepulona's drive to the rim gave the Crusaders a 28-19 going into halftime.

"It was good execution on our part. We were pretty patient on offense and that's something coach Dan stressed upon us. It was a good, all-around team effort of trusting each other," Bayudan said.

Bayudan blew by his defender for a layup to put the Crusaders back up by seven. Lyons split a pair of free throws and Jack Jones kicked it out to Mandaquit, who buried a 3-pointer to get Iolani within three. Bianco found Kache Kaio off a cut to put Saint Louis up, 33-28 going into the final quarter.

"We made some good runs when we got down seven to tie it up again. We got close but could never really get over the hump," Hirata said.

"It was two good teams going at each other. A shot here a shot there, the game could go either way and I'm glad the guys got gritty and got loose balls when they needed to. That's what wins games," Hale said.

Taniela "Nela" Taliauli hit a pair of free throws 18 seconds into the quarter and Bayudan split his foul shots for a 34-30 lead. Sepulona added a field goal but Aaron Claytor cut the deficit in half for his first and only triple of the game.

Jones and Claytor combined to shoot 1 for 3 from the free throw line and Bianco hit a shot in the paint to put Saint Louis up, 40-34.

"I thought we had good looks but couldn't hit them. Saint Louis did," Hirata said.

Bayudan went 4-for-4 on one-and-one free throw attempts that built a 10 point lead. Mandaquit hit a deep 3 from the right wing with 30.7 seconds left but Arquette threw down a dunk on the fast break and Bayudan sank another free throw to put the game out of reach.

Saint Louis has little time to savor the victory as they go to No. 5 Punahou on Thursday, Jan. 20 and host No. 4 Maryknoll on Saturday to close out the week.

Iolani goes to Maryknoll on Thursday and hosts No. 3 Kamehameha on Saturday.

Both teams will face each other again on Jan. 27 at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium.
