KANEOHE — Visiting Moanalua scored in every quarter en route to a 49-26 win over No. 13 Castle in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I game Saturday night.

Na Menehune amassed over 408 yards of total offense as they improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Momentum was on Moanalua's side from the get-go.

After an encroachment penalty on the kicking team, Andy Canencia took the opening kickoff up the left hash for a 74-yard return to give Na Menehune the lead eight seconds into the game.

Moanalua's offense then strung together four consecutive scoring drives after its first series for a double-digit advantage in the first half.

"That was a big part of our success," first-year Na Menehune coach Vince Nihipali said of the opening return. "We've been struggling offensively the last two weeks, so to start off with something like that gives the boys a little more zest."

Turnovers still plagued Moanalua with three interceptions, but it was an improvement from the six turnovers in its 28-25 win over Aiea a week ago.

"We tried to stay focused more," said freshman receiver Jayce Bareng, who led the team with eight receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown. He was also stopped just shy of the goal line on two of his catches.

"We did way better than last week. We just try to play together and stick together."

Quarterback Taylor Malloe forced a few throws, but held his own and finished with 225 passing yards and three TDs.

The running game was also solid with 161 yards on the ground and three scores. Cameron Johnson and Ryson Lum saw the bulk of the carries with 66 and 65 yards rushing respectively.

Castle (1-1) got two touchdowns apiece from Coby Tanioka and Kala Estacado-Matthews to keep the Knights in the game against Moanalua.

The home team capitalized on an early Malloe interception with a 13-play drive that was aided by three Moanalua penalties. Tanioka capped the drive with a bootleg around left end to tie the game at 7 with 2:00 remaining in the opening quarter.

A kick-catching interference penalty on the ensuing kickoff gave Na Menehune a short field for their next possession. Malloe's 8-yard pass to tight end Ruben Chavez put the visitors back ahead just before the ending of the first stanza.

Moanalua extended its lead on Malloe's second TD of the night on a 11-yard pass to a streaking Kindred Malakai Park in the back of the end zone. Alex Heim's PAT made it 21-7 at the 6:50 mark of the second quarter.

The Knights responded quickly when Estacado-Matthews returned the following kickoff for a 86-yard score.

Na Menehune continued its string of first-half scores on their next two possessions and Estacado-Matthews caught a 27-yard TD pass from Daunte Ching just before halftime to make it a 35-20 game at the break.

Isaac Ishikawa recovered an onside kick for Moanalua to start the third quarter, which set up Lum's 6-yard TD run. Na Menehune added another score to begin the fourth quarter on Pila Goo Sun's 1-yard blast to give the visitors their largest lead of the night, 49-20.

Ching threw a 14-yard TD pass to Tanioka with 4:52 remaining in regulation for the final points of the night.

Blazye Sumiye led Moanalua defensively with 2 1/2 tackles for loss.

Malachi Rombawa recorded a pair two interceptions and Bronson Pakele had 10 total tackles (four for loss) to lead the Knights' defense.

Na Menehune will host Waipahu (1-0) while Castle will travel to play Iolani in a non-league contest. Both games are scheduled for next Friday.
