Betancourt's all-around play leads Campbell over Waianae

EWA BEACH - Campbell's Diego Betancourt was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night.

The senior scored in all phases of the game in leading No, 5 Campbell over No. 8 Waianae, 39-0, in Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division football at the Sabers' field. Betancourt had two interceptions, returning one of 99 yards for one TD; returned a punt 92 yards for another score; and hauled in a 47-yard TD reception.

"It's too bad he didn't have a junior season (because COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season) because he would have done that his junior year, too," Campbell coach Darren Johnson said. "We put him in there and he makes plays. He's been doing real good for us. Good things are happening to him because he puts in that kind of work in practice."

Betancourt's interception return with four minutes, 30 seconds left put the game into running-clock mode because the 35-point differential mercy rule to help the Sabers improve to 2-0 and drop the Seariders to 1-2.

Campbell's defense came up with big plays all night. Besides the two interceptions by Betancourt, Campbell recovered two fumbles and sacked Waianae quarterback Trent Moniz-Babb six times, three by Junior Lemaota.

"They played good D and we expected a great defense," Johnson said. "We're young on offense and we just come around and help out our defense a lot more."

Ironically, it was the Sabers who turned over the ball first when Kayzhen Aiwohi's interceptied Chain Kuboyama-Hayashi's pass on the Sabers' first series of the game. But Campbell's defense was quick to get the ball back when it recovered a Waianae fumble after a 14-yard pass play.

After a scoreless first period, the Sabers mounted a 65-yard scoring drive that ended with running back Chauncee Lopez's 1-yard TD run. Caizzic Ili missed the PAT to keep the score 6-0 with 5:26 left in the half.

The Sabers pounced on another loose ball after a Waianae pass completion, but this time, Carson Murakami returned it 25 yards for a TD. Campbell tried a fake PAT, but Ili's pass was incomplete to make it 12-0 with 3:58 left in the second period.

Waianae got off its best punt of the night of 48 yards, but Betancourt returned that 92 yards for the TD. Lopez ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 20-0 with 1:44 left in the half.

Betancourt's first interception of the game came in the third quarter and set up Kuboyama-Hayashi's 30-yard TD pass to Dominick Espinda. Another 2-point try failed, keeping the score 26-0 with 6:35 in the third.

The Sabers scored early in the fourth on Kuboyama-Hayashi's 47-yard TD pass to Betancourt making it 32-0 after yet another failed 2-point try.

Betancourt sealed the Seariders' fate later. The Seariders drove fin their 48 to the Sabers' 1, but on second-and-goal, Betancourt picked off Moniz-Babb and sprinted up the left sideline for his third TD of the game. Ili finally made the PAT with 4:30 left to make it 39-0.

The Sabers will visit cross Ewa plain rival Kapolei, while the Seariders play host to Kahuku. Both games are next Saturday.
