MIL football schedule released, Lunas to make D1 debut on opening night

The Maui Interscholastic League released an updated 11-man football schedule late Thursday night.

The five-team league will play a six-game regular season that is split into two, equally-weighted rounds. The first round is a round-robin format with each team slated for four games. The second round will see the three Division I teams (Baldwin, Maui High, Lahainaluna) will play a single round against each other, while the two Division II teams (Kamehameha-Maui and King Kekaulike) will face-off twice.

If the first- and second-round champions are different, then there will be a one-game playoff for the MIL title; the D1 playoff would take place on Dec. 17, while the D2 playoff, if necessary, is scheduled for Dec. 18.

The MIL schedule begins on Friday, Oct. 22 with Maui High visiting Sue D. Cooley Stadium for its first of two meetings against No. 13 Lahainaluna, which will be making its Division I debut after completing a highly-successful run in D2 that culminated with its fourth consecutive state championship in 2019.

The other game of the opening weekend features King Kekaulike taking on Baldwin on Saturday, Oct. 23 at War Memorial Stadium. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, as are all seven contests scheduled for the Maui County-operated facility.

The league has yet to release a schedule for its 8-man division, which is made up of Hana, Lanai and Molokai.
