The Hawaii High School Athletic Association announced Saturday in an emailed press release it will not be conducting state tournaments in March for the following sports that were scheduled to begin their seasons on Monday: air riflery, boys and girls basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, canoe paddling, boys and girls soccer, swimming and diving and wrestling.

The release states that the decision was based on "several factors, including, but not limited to, travel restrictions and that leagues were already conducting shortened seasons."

HHSAA executive director Chris Chun is quoted: "Our intent for cancelling the first set of state tournaments was to allow our member schools the opportunity to participate in a longer league season, rather than a truncated one with regional and state tournament play for only a limited number of schools. Although the state tournaments are cancelled, leagues are not restricted in conducting their seasons if it is deemed safe to do so. We will continue to work with the Department of Health and government officials for the possibility to hold state tournaments for the remaining sports in late May."

The remaining sports scheduled to start in March and conclude in May include baseball, football, golf, judo, softball, tennis, track and field, water polo and boys and girls volleyball.
