Rainbow Warriors too much for Vulcans, 89-66


 





Justin Webster scored a team-high 15 points and Casdon Jardine recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Hawaii at Manoa men's basketball team to an 89-66 win over Hawaii-Hilo at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center Saturday night.

The Rainbow Warriors never trailed and led by as many as 30 points. They shot 50 percent from the field (32 of 64), including 9 of 19 on 3-pointers, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The game will count an as exhibition for the Division-II Vulcans, who were making their debut under first-year coach Kaniela Akiona, a 2001 Honokaa graduate.

James Jean-Marie came off the bench to score 11 of his 12 points after halftime. Justin Hemsley added 10 points for Hawaii, which shot 19 of 31 from the field (61.3 percent) after halftime, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc (62.5 percent).

Mate Colina scored seven points with seven rebounds, Biwali Bayles had six points, five assists and four rebounds and Bernardo Da Silva notched nine rebounds and two points off the bench in the win.

Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored a game-high 18 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Vulcans, who went 12-14 overall last year and 10-12 in the PacWest Conference. Sasa Vuksanovic added 14 points and Darren Williams chipped in with 13 in the loss.

UH-Hilo shot 37.1 percent from the field (23 of 62) and just 20 percent on 3-pointers (4 of 20).

UH-Manoa dominated UH-Hilo in rebounds (53 to 28) and bench points (42 to 11), but the ‘Bows turned it over 21 times to 14 for the Vulcans, which led to 21 points off of turnovers for UHH.

Sophomore forward Zoar Nedd (Kapolei '18) scored three points and grabbed two rebounds in six minutes and sophomore guardKameron Ng (Saint Francis '19) had one point in seven minutes for the ‘Bows.

Freshman guard Kiai Apple (Waiakea '20) played 11 minutes off the bench for UH-Hilo and scored three points with one assist. Redshirt freshman guard Payton Grant (Maryknoll '19) missed the only shot he took in two minutes played for the Vulcans.

The ‘Bows led at halftime, 37-27, and outscored the Vulcans after the mission, 52-39.

UH-Manoa opens the Big West Conference season at home against Cal Poly on Dec. 27 and 28 at SimpliFi Arena.
