UH separates from HPU with strong second half in season opener

The University of Hawaii men's basketball team borrowed a page out of the football team's playbook with a strong second-half effort in its season opener Friday night.

Senior transfer James Jean-Marie scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in his first UH game to lead the Rainbow Warriors to an 83-50 win over Division-II Hawaii Pacific at the newly-named SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

After a competitive first half that saw UH lead by as many as six points and HPU in front as many as four, the home team completely took over after halftime. Hawaii (1-0) shot 66.7 percent (20 of 30) from the field after the break and outscored the visiting Sharks (0-1) 53 to 25 in the final 20 minutes.

Jean-Marie, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound post who played at the University of San Diego last season, was a perfect 6-of-6 shooting on field goals in the second half, when he scored 15 of his points. He finished 8 of 10 for the game in 20 minutes played.

Mate Colina shot 7-of-9 from the field and scored a career-high 17 points with six rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Justin Webster had 12 points and Utah Valley-transfer Casdon Jardin added 11 in his UH debut.

David Rowlands led HPU with 12 points.

Freshman post Oscar Cheng (Kahuku '20) had two points and redshirt freshman guard Jakob Kimura (Punahou '19) logged one steal and an assist in six minutes for the Sharks. Senior guard Jacob McEnroe (Farrington '14) did not play.

Sophomore forward Zoar Nedd (Kapolei '18) played seven minutes and made both field goals he attempted to finish with four points and a steal. One of his baskets was assisted by sophomore guard Kameron Ng (Saint Francis '19), who notched three assists and three rebounds in 13 minutes for the Rainbow Warriors.

Hawaii led at halftime, 30-25.

UH shot 47.6 percent (30 of 63) on field goals for the game, while HPU shot 38.5 percent (20 of 52).

The Sharks were out-rebounded by the Rainbow Warriors, 44 to 28, and committed 21 turnovers to UH's 11. Hawaii also dominated HPU in points scored in the paint, 44-22.
