KAILUA — Junior Jack Lemonds recorded a hat trick to help fifth-ranked Kalaheo continue its winning ways with a 4-0 win over No. 9 Kailua at Lee A. Cashman Field Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs are now a perfect 5-0 and are currently in first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division standings.

The Surfriders suffered their first loss of the season and now have a record of 3-1.

Kalaheo opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Maxx Waynant headed the ball over the outstretched Kailua goalkeeper. Daniel Fujiwara had the assist.

The Mustangs doubled their lead in the 14th minute when Fujiwara found Lemonds inside the box and Lemonds finished it off from close range.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, Kailua rallied and created a few chances of their own.

Kailua midfielder Noah Larson played a through ball to Samson Rasay, but Kalaheo keeper Braden Uehara made the point-blank save.

A few minutes later, the Surfriders were awarded a free kick right outside the Mustangs' 18-yard box. Ricky Quebral hit the free kick off the crossbar, which was then cleared by a Kalaheo defender.

Kailua was given another free kick from almost the exact same spot seconds later. Quebral chipped the free kick to Larson, but Uehara made a leaping save, ending the first half.

After halftime, Kalaheo went back to dominating the flow of play and would make it 3-0 in the 60th minute. Lemonds and Zanskar Stohler outbattled five Kailua defenders in the box and Lemonds buried the ball towards the far post.

Lemonds secured his hat trick in the 64th minute. He collected a cross from Teo Stohler and hit it passed the keeper, making it his second hat trick of the season. He leads the Mustangs with a total of eight goals.

No more goals were scored the rest of the half but things got chippy at the end and Kalaheo forward Lorenzo Hernandez received a red card for a late kick on a Kailua player.

Kalaheo will travel to McKinley on Monday Dec. 30 while Kailua will look to rebound against Kaimuki at home on the same date.
