Waiakea (10-3-1) 1 0 - - - 1

After a sluggish start, Hilo turned up the offensive intensity in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring two goals in a span of just two minutes to come away with a 2-1 win over Waiakea.

Logan Mizuba scored on a ball that deflected off the keeper in the 48th minute of play to level the score at 1-1 and Michael DeCoito gave Hilo the lead for good just two minutes later on a shot set up by Mizuba.

"It felt great, we've been crosstown rivals since way before my days," said Mizuba on the win.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard first, as John Grover lasered a shot past the Vikings' keeper in the 26th minute to give the home team the early advantage.

Tenurous for sure, but the lead held through the first 40 minutes of play, as Hilo found clean chances in short supply in the opening half.

It was a different story after halftime, as the Vikings seemed to up the offensive intensity early on, and capitalized in the 48th minute when Mizuba redirected a shot that deflected off the keeper back in for the equalizer.

"All week we've been practicing following up when the keeper drops it (the ball), because we know that he drops balls," said Mizuba. "We've been practicing to finish whenever he (the keeper) misses it and get that second touch and we just executed that properly."

Less than 90 seconds later came the go-ahead goal for the Vikings, with MIzuba pausing just long enough to set the table for DeCoito, who pushed the ball past the keeper for the goal.

"We've been working on laying off balls and playing through, so I think that contributed to that goal," said DeCoito.

Following the go-ahead score, the Warriors had more than a few chances to equalize, but Vikings' keeper Jyson Breitbarth was equal to the task, which included two key stops in the final minutes to seal the victory.

The win marked the fifth win in a row this season for the Vikings, with the only blemish being a 1-0 defeat at the hands of perennial BIIF soccer powerhouse Hawaii Prep back on Dec. 7.
