WAIPAHU — Kaylee Canianes scored her first goal of the season on a header in the 53rd minute and Madeline Taylor made a pair of pivotal second-half saves in goal to lead visiting Campbell to a 1-0 win over Waipahu at the Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex Friday night.

The Sabers improved to 3-0 on the season to pull into a four-way tie for first place in the Western Division of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Campbell, Pearl City, Kapolei and Mililani are deadlocked atop the D1 West standings with nine points apiece.

The Marauders, who were coming off a 1-0 win over the Hurricanes Tuesday night, fell to 1-3 with the loss.

"I guess we kind of came out flat in the first half," said Campbell coach James Curran, whose team was coming off of a bye and had not played since last Friday.

"We weren't really stringing passes together or getting any decent looks on goal. We're still trying to find and build certain players in certain areas, so we struggled in some areas, but we saw some good things," Curran said. "Second half, I guess our girls came out a little bit more fired up. We got a few set pieces and finally put one in on a clean-up."

The Sabers managed five shots on goals before halftime, but none were especially dangerous and each was saved by Waipahu goalkeeper Amelia Nelson.

Campbell started to get its possession game going about midway through the first way via its center-midfielders Jourdyn Curran and Cheyenne Mattos. Mattos managed a couple of shots on goal from about 15 and 25 yards out, but was denied both times. About 10 minutes later she served an indirect free kick to the top of the 18-yard box, where Jezarae Texeira attempted to flick the ball on goal with a header, but Nelson again came up with the save.

"I'd say at halftime we just tried to come out as a better team, come out more intense," said Canianes, a senior midfielder. "When we started the second half, we definitely tried to put more pressure on their team to get a reaction out of them."

About 13 minutes into the second half, Canianes recorded the game's only goal when Campbell converted on its second of two Jourdyn Curran corner kicks about a minute apart.

The sequence actually began with a Waipahu foul that gave Mattos a free kick from about 40 yards out on the right flank. Mattos fired a driving shot that Nelson deflected off of the football crossbar to give Campbell its first corner kick.

Curran's first corner was successfully defended by the Marauders, but led to another shot at it. Her second try found Sharey Romero near the back post. Romero hit a one-timer that was saved by Waipahu goalkeeper Amelia Nelson, but the ricochet eventually found Canianes, who popped the ball with her head just over Nelson and into the goal.

"I'd say it was a really hectic corner kick," Canianes said. "Our left back (Romero) had a shot and then it ricocheted and it went off (Waipahu defender Amalia Keaunui-Gabaylo) and then I just headed the ball in."

"Set pieces are often the difference in a game, so we rehearse a lot on set pieces," James Curran said.

Waipahu coach Brent Murakami noted that his team scored off of a corner kick in its 1-0 win over Kapolei Tuesday.

"It can definitely be a big part of the game," said Murakami, who found himself a bit uneasy during the sequence of corner kicks.

"I got a little bit nervous after the first one was saved — after the (Mattos) free kick was saved — just because you can kind of get excited about the good save, but now you got a corner kick to defend and then when we got that away, the second one it was like, you can only defend for so long, you know before something's going to go in," Murakami said. "But it was good and bad in that whole set there. I mean, our keeper had two good saves, our fullback cleared off the line, so those things we can use further down in the season, but it was just that we were one short, they punished us for it and that's what's going to decide these types of games."

About 15 minutes after the goal, the Marauders managed back-to-back shots on goal about a minute apart, but were denied the equalizer on diving saves from Taylor both times.

"The one that was the long ball over the top and then it bounced and then it came right into the box, I knew I had to just slide at her and just shut it down, because if we would have gotten scored on there I don't know if we would have had the power to come back in a way, because we were so proud of ourselves and then we wanted to keep that going and if that would have scored we would have kind of dropped down (emotionally) a little bit, I think," said Taylor, a sophomore transfer.

Taylor made her first start in goal for the Sabers, who were without starter Codey Yamane (injury). Taylor had come off of the bench to start the second half relief of Yamane in both of Campbell's two previous games.

"I think she did really good. I'm really proud of her, she definitely stepped up for Codey and I think she did a really good job of stepping up for our entire team," Canianes said.

James Curran had much the same to say about Taylor's efforts as of late.

"She's been proving herself to make big plays for us, stopping game-changing goals. Even against Leilehua they had like maybe one shot and it was actually (on) goal and she actually made the save, so she's really stepping up and proving herself in big moments," he said.

Taylor said despite it being her first start, she kept the butterflies at bay.

"I've been playing for a long time and I wasn't really nervous, I was just like excited, because I like to be able to play both halves because then I am in it in during second half, because a lot of times going into second half I'm a little, not like super ready because I haven't been in obviously, so I definitely like starting off and getting to start that little groove with my team," said Taylor, who logged three total saves in the win.

The Sabers finished with 10 shots on goal to three for the Marauders, who got nine saves from Nelson in goal.

The final whistle meant that Waipahu had completed a rugged stretch of games against top contenders Mililani, Pearl City, Kapolei and Campbell to open the regular season.

Murakami said there was much to draw from Friday's loss, as well as his team's 1-3 start.

"I think what was good for us in the second half that that was the grittiest that we've played all year in the second half. It wasn't necessarily the nicest soccer, but this team hasn't showed enough grit yet. Even if we were losing in previous games, I think that was the best fight and Campbell is a good team, so if we can take that piece out of the second half and use it and hopefully blend it with good soccer, then it might be able to benefit us down the stretch," said Murakami, whose saw Keaunui-Gabaylo have to leave the game in the final minutes due to injury.

"We're probably gonna have some dinged up players, which, we can't take any team lightly, but I'm kind of glad that that four-game stretch is done. It's a good thing that it's Friday and the girls have a few days off to recover before we train again."

Both teams continue league play Tuesday. Campbell will host Radford, while Waipahu will visit Waianae.
