Iaea's 303 yards, 2 TDs top Week 6

The skies were clear above Kailua Friday night, but Gary Rosolowich was soaked after his team's 31-15 upset over then No. 3-ranked Farrington. As the final seconds ran off in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference showdown, the Surfriders doused their head coach with some celebratory ice water.

A joyous Rosolowich had reason to smile, perhaps none bigger than the performance of his sophomore quarterback, Kahaku Iaea. Iaea, a second-year starter, carried the Surfriders offensively all game. With Kailua's rushing game struggling (12 yards on 19 carries), Iaea picked apart the Govs' defense, completing 25 of his 36 pass attempts for 303 yards. He completed passes to seven different receivers and threw touchdowns of 38 yards and 30 yards.

"He's shown a lot of growth as a quarterback since last year," Rosolowich said. "But, I think it's not just him as an individual, I think the whole team offensively, defensively and even special teams, really hunkered down and played a good football game against a good football team."

Iaea's first five passes were completed to three different players. Later in the first quarter, Iaea threw four consecutive incompletions, the last of which was intercepted, but he persevered to complete his next 10 attempts and 15 of his last 18, including the scoring strikes to Eric Lum and Jarrin Young.

"It was a team effort," said the 6-foot, 204-pound Iaea. "The (offensive) line gave me time to throw and the receivers were on the same page."

Kailua (4-2, 3-1 Red East) is in second place behind top-ranked Kahuku and visits Kaiser (0-6, 0-4) Friday.
