KALIHI — Leilehua scored 28 points in the first half to roll past a depleted Farrington squad, 35-0 in a non-league Oahu Interscholastic Association game at Edward 'Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field Friday.

In his first varsity start, Kalei Akagi threw for 209 yards on 14-of-31 passing, no picks, a touchdown and added another rushing score for the Mules (1-0 overall).

"It felt amazing. We prepared really hard for this. Our offense and defense worked their butts off. It was just amazing to ball out with all my teammates," AKagi said.

On the other side, No. 8 Farrington (0-1 overall) had 33 players suited up for the game and was missing about 20 players mostly physical-related according to coach Daniel Sanchez.

"90 percent of those guys missing were due to physical issues. They couldn't pass their physicals for some reason. We had a lot of guys who couldn't pass physicals, blood pressure, heart problems. We had some guys end up the hospital. We had some guys take trips to Vegas. So 19-20 guys didn't have enough days to play this game. You need two days of helmets, shoulder pads top half and five days full pads. We had 19 guys that didn't qualify and make the cut," he explained.

"We were missing about four starters on the o-line. Even on the defensive side we had about four starters out."

Leilehua scored on their opening possession after Kalei Akagi scored on a 22-yard keeper to cap a seven play, 55-yard drive for a 7-0 lead.

The Govrnors mounted a 13 play drive and got down to the Leilehua 14 but turned it over on downs. It was the furthest the Farrington offense got all night.

"We moved the ball. With the guys that played, we had some positives. We didn't execute on both sides of the ball. We knew we had to play iron-man football. Guys had to play two ways," Sanchez said.

Darius Chaffin in his first varsity start threw for 172 yards on 17-of-34 passing and added 29 rushing yards on 11 attempts.

"I think he held his own. He didn't turn over the ball. He made some nice reads, we had some drops by the receivers. But all in all, with what we had tonight, he did a good job," Sanchez said of Chaffin.

Tony Paleafei had 55 rushing yards on four attempts and had a 21 and 25 yard kick and punt return respectively for the Govs.

"He comes out and trains hard in the summer. He really improved a lot. When Raymond (Millare) went down, we threw him back there and let him run the ball," Sanchez said of Paleafei.

The Mules converted a fourth-and-9 and used trickery as Jayzon Ramos took the reverse to gain 14 yards to set up Cody Akagi's 5-yard touchdown.

"Me and him are on the same page," Kalei said of his cousin Cody. "We just know. We have that thing when people have a good relationship so it's just fun and I love it."

Cy Acohido knocked the ball out of Chaffin's hand and Laakea Umiamaka, who had a sack seven plays earlier, recovered the ball. Leilehua redeemed the turnover into quick points as Kalei Akagi went deep to Jonathan Vasquez for a 64-yard touchdown for a 21-0 lead. Vasquez led all receivers with 116 yards.

"It was the right coverage and right timing, everything went perfectly for that down," Kalei Akagi said.

After the Govs turned it over on downs, the Mules needed 12 plays to get another touchdown on the board as Damarion Smith rushed for a 4-yard score 10 seconds before halftime, as Leilehua led 28-0 at intermission.

Kekoa Turnagan threw an 8-yard touchdown to Ramos, who finished with seven receptions for 84 receiving yards, to make it 35-0 for the last score of the game.

"They (Vasquez and Ramos) are big targets and make big plays," Kalei Akagi said.

Umiamaka had two tackle for losses, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to lead the Mules' defense.

"Each d-linemen have a job so I'm thankful for our defensive line for making plays for the linebackers. Our defense is pretty good and our d-linemen makes our jobs easier," said Kiaka Pio, who had a sack and a pass breakup.

Mules start Division I play hosting Kailua on Aug. 10 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. Govs hope to have their missing players back as it opens Open Division play against visiting Punahou on Aug. 9.
