Distinguished Athlete Awards honors 23

ALA MOANA — For the sixth consecutive year, ScoringLive celebrated exceptional athletic achievement from 23 student-athletes at our annual Distinguished Athlete Awards presented by Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra Saturday, June 6 in the Hibiscus Ballroom at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Iolani soccer's Lincoln Oishi was named Male Distinguished Athlete of the Year while Kamehameha basketball's Kalina Obrey took home the Female Distinguished Athlete of the Year award, both given to the top overall athlete in a single sport during the past year.

The Pizza Hut Newcomer Award recognizes superior performance by a male and female student-athlete participating in their first full year of play in varsity athletics. Damien basketball junior Jake Holtz and Iolani softball freshman Ailana Agbayani were awarded as the male and female recipients, respectively. It was the first time an All-Hawaii Player of the Year was also chosen for the Pizza Hut Newcomer Award.

All-Hawaii Players of the Year Sunshine Fontes, Elena Oglivie and Alfred Failauga were also selected for the Pizza Hut Newcomer Award in previous years.

Hawaii News Now sports reporter Kainoa Carlson served as the master of ceremonies and the event was streamed live on the Hawaii News Now facebook page.
