Twelve student-athletes from 11 different schools were honored at the annual Enterprise Rent-A-Car/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor awards dinner Sunday night at the Pomaikai Ballrooms.
Seven boys and five girls were inducted as part of the HHSAA's 37th Hall of Honor class, which includes the first inductee from Lanai.
Punahou grad and Hall of Honor '09 inductee Manti Teo was this year's keynote speaker. The former two-sport star finished as a Heisman Trophy Finalist in 2012 while leading Notre Dame to a BCS National Championship runner-up finish in his senior season. He is currently a NFL free agent after having spent time with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints. Teo has had to fight through a multitude of setbacks from injuries that have caused him to miss 37 games in his six-year career.
Class of 2019 HHSAA Hall of Honor: » Naighel Calderon, Lanai (football, basketball, baseball) » Duke Clemens, Punahou (football, basketball, baseball, track and field) » Kelani Corbett, Leilehua (wrestling, judo) » Kiran Costa, Kapaa (soccer, volleyball, football) » Sunshine Fontes, Pearl City (soccer) » Dillon Gabriel, Mililani (football) » Ashley Gooman, Kamehameha (wrestling) » Mikayla Kekoa, Kohala (volleyball, basketball, softball) » Kameron Ng, Saint Francis (basketball, volleyball) » Kalina Obrey, Kamehameha (basketball, volleyball) » Faatui Tuitele, Saint Louis (football) » Noah Wusstig, Moanalua (judo, wrestling)
The group was chosen from amongst a group of 46 applicants by a 14-person selection committee made up of current and former sports reporters, coaches and athletics directors. Each individual will receive a $2,000 scholarship courtesy of Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
A complete list of inductees, dating back to the inaugural class of 1983, can be found here.
