The final four in Division II softball will kick off with a Friday 4:30 p.m. battle between unseeded Kohala and second-seeded Waialua.
The Cowgirls edged third-seeded Kapaa, 7-6, while the Bulldogs rallied with a 10-run sixth inning to fend off upset-minded Honokaa, 12-6, Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the DataHouse D2 Softball Championships at Patsy T. Mink Field at Maui High.
Leading Kohala in its second win of the state tournament was senior pitcher Mikayla Kekoa, who dominated in the circle and at the plate. She tossed 15 strikeouts and scattered four hits in a complete-game effort while batting 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored.
For Waialua, the OIA champion trailed 6-2 after giving up a run in the first four innings, but found its footing in the bottom of the sixth to turn back the Dragons. Anela Hernandez doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Bulldogs in the win. Eight different Waialua players recorded an RBI in the victory.
