Male Athlete of the Week: Ethan Thomas, Mililani baseball
Last week was a good one indeed for the Mililani baseball team and no one on the squad had a better week than Ethan Thomas.

Thomas, a junior first baseman, batted a combined 5 for 6 with two walks, eight runs batted in and six runs scored to lead the Trojans in runaway road victories over Waianae and Aiea. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Thomas stroked a home run and a double in both Wednesday's 22-9 five-inning win over the Seariders and Saturday's 18-5 six-inning win over Na Alii.

"He did a great job for us," Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said of his third batter. "He kind of carried us offensively. He's been making some adjustments with his swing and things are starting to fall into place for him. He's starting to believe in what we're doing so it's good to see him have some success."

After grounding out in his first at-bat Wednesday, Thomas worked a four-pitch walk his next time up and eventually scored on a Hunter Faildo double to give his team a 6-1 lead. Thomas came up to bat a second time in the inning — a 9-run top of the third for the Trojans — and hit a first-pitch offering for a two-out double to left field.

"His whole approach has kind of changed where he's not trying to pull everything and he's working on trying to stay inside the ball, focus on driving the ball the other way and if it's inside just turn on it, so he's kind of bought into that and he's making more consistent solid contact, the ball is traveling a little longer and he's getting more consistent pitches to hit," Hirayama said of the right-handed Thomas.

In his final at-bat against Waianae, Thomas pelted a three-run home run on a line drive over the fence in left field that made the score 21-8.

"That one didn't get very high off the ground; you probably could have dried some clothes on that one. He turned on that pitch pretty good," Hirayama said. "I think a lot of it too is as the swing gets a little more comfortable and he gets a little more confidence in that, then he can start focusing a little more on the mental side and just looking for good pitches to hit."

Thomas did anything but cool off against Aiea Saturday. He singled in his first at-bat to center field and came around to score on a Cole Akamu two-out single to make it a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning. After he was beaned by a pitch in his second plate appearance, Thomas worked a four-pitch walk and scored soon after to extend it to a 7-1 lead.

"We don't ask any one guy to carry us, so if teams are going to put (Thomas) on base, we'll ask the next guy to pick him up and if (Thomas) gets something to hit, turn it loose, so whatever way he can to pick up the team and not being overly aggressive, because a lot of times you try to do too much and things tend to fall backward," Hirayama said.

Thomas drove in a pair of runs with his two-out double before coming in to score himself in the top of the fifth. He wrapped up the day with a 3-run homer to center field in the sixth to make it a 16-3 Mililani lead at the time.

"The biggest difference for him has been changing his swing angle," Hirayama said. "Everybody is buying into launch angle and that's great for Major Leaguers, who have great hand-eye coordination and the ability to hit it a long ways, but for us we're trying to focus on hitting hard line drives and making good contact. Those Major Leaguers can mis-hit a pitch and drive it 400 feet, that's the difference. I think Ethan's made a good adjustment on that. He's shortened up his swing a little bit and he's able to handle more pitches and able to put more barrel on the ball."

On the season, Thomas is batting .407 and leads the Trojans in hits (11), runs (10), RBI (9) and doubles (4). However, not to be overlooked is his defensive prowess at first base.

"I think what helps us is his size. We don't have to try and hit a small target, which gives our infielders an opportunity to go ahead and throw the ball and if it's anywhere near his wingspan, he'll probably get it and that's a big plus," Hirayama said. "Scouting wise, you look at his size and everybody's gotta turn their heads and try to figure out what he can do with his size, but it's always a plus that he can swing the bat a little bit and then defensively he takes up space over there."

Hirayama said Thomas is typically all business, all the time.

"He's kind of a serious kid. He doesn't say a lot, but he just does his work and you kinda gotta ask him questions to get anything out of him. He'll chuckle here and there, but he's a little more on the serious side," Hirayama said. "The good thing is he puts in a lot of time swinging the bat before and after practice. He's got a good work ethic, but he's also a good kid and he's a pleasure to have around."

Mililani (8-1), the No. 10 team in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, hold a one-half game lead on ninth-ranked Campbell (7-1) in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West standings to start the week.

Thomas and the Trojans will put a four-game win streak on the line against Leilehua (5-4) Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

Female Athlete of the Week: Brooke Baptiste, Kamehameha-Hawaii softball
The Kamehameha-Hawaii softball team had a string of four games in six days last week, but Brooke Baptiste was up to the task.

The Warriors ended up winning all four games to complete a perfect 14-0 regular-season schedule and Baptiste, a 6-foot senior, was the winning pitcher in each contest.

Baptiste started off the week with a season-high 15 strikeouts in Monday's two-hitter against Konawaena. She issued just one walk in the 8-0 win and also recorded three base hits in and a run scored in four at-bats.

"That one her rise was working really good that day," Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Akeamakamae Kiyuna said. "Her rise and her drop was just catching the batters off-guard; They were having to guess on the placement of the pitches."

Two days later, Baptiste logged her fourth no-hitter of the season in a 22-0 win at Keaau that was called after three innings due to the mercy rule.

"She had two triples batting in that game, too. In fact, she had a hit in every at-bat," Kiyuna remarked.

The very next day, Baptiste and the Warriors hit the road for a game at Kohala — the same team which pushed them in a narrow 3-2 win back on March 18.

Thursday's rematch, however, was a different story as Baptiste no-hit the Cowgirls with seven strikeouts. The six walks she allowed tied a season-high, but she gave up just one earned run in the 9-3 win.

"Our game plan for Brooke was to work the corners, work her different pitches and we talked to the defense as well and we told her that they have to back her up, they have to make the plays on both sides of the ball," Kiyuna said. "We were really proud of their performance that day."

But Baptiste wasn't done just yet. The right-hander shut down a prolific Waiakea offense to the tune of one unearned run on three hits in a 7-1 win Saturday. She struck out six and walked two in a complete-game effort to run her record to 12-0 on the season with a minuscule 0.42 ERA.

"I think the fact that it was her senior game, or the senior game, I think fueled her a little bit, just having that adrenaline going and she plays with a lot of the (Waiakea) girls in the offseason and a lot of them know each other, so that friendly competition that they already have with each other I think just made them feel a little more relaxed, which sometimes can be worrisome, but I've found that with this team and with Brooke, if they're relaxed, they play their best game," Kiyuna said.

Baptiste has surrendered just eight runs — only four of them earned — on 13 hits in 66 innings this season. Kiyuna said that Baptiste's maturity in the pitching circle has improved in each of her four varsity seasons.

"I think she's grown into being in that leadership role, not just as a pitcher, but as a returning player, as a senior, but with that she's learned to trust her teammates on the field on both offense and defense, so I think having that trust, knowing that people are gonna have your back, takes off a lot of the edge when you have to pitch. I think that's been a lot of our success as a team is her trusting her defense and everybody working together to get the job done," Kiyuna said.

Kiyuna said that Baptiste has worked diligently to improve all four of her pitches in her repertoire.

"I think once she feels comfortable in her warm-ups, whether at practice or before games, once she gets into a groove with that one pitch, she kind of is able to figure out how to make every other pitch work," Kiyuna said. "We've worked more on her control this year. Even though we have some walks here and there, she's definitely gained a lot more control over her pitches."

To be sure, Baptiste has also benefitted from having three-year starer Kawai Kauahi-Raquel behind the plate.

"I think especially this year that relationship has been really, really helpful," Kiyuna said. "They know how to communicate with each other without saying any words. Kawai knows how she needs to adjust herself to help Brooke out with certain pitches, or depending how the zone is for that game, so that relationship really helps."

The Warriors, who are playing all their games away from home this season due to work being done on the field, have won the last seven Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II championships. They reached the Division II state final last year, but lost to Saint Francis by a score of 10-0 in five innings.

"Before last week started we talked to the girls about it, we talked to Brooke about it and told them that they have to dig deep," Kiyuna said. "They set a goal for themselves to make it to the postseason and try to make it back to states this year and we don't make any excuses that we don't play at our home field — we're happy that we actually get to play — so if we gotta play four games in one week, then we gotta play four games in one week. They all want to be there. This is what they worked for and they did great last week with four games in six days."

Baptiste and the Warriors can punch their tickets for a return trip to states this weekend with a best-of-3 series victory over Konawaena in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation semifinals.
