Rainbow Wahine bounce back against SIUE

MANOA — Freshman Mikaela Gandia-Mak hit two RBI doubles as fellow frosh Izzy Dino pitched a complete game to lead the Rainbow Wahine past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 5-3, Monday evening in a non-conference matchup at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Junior Callee Heen also launched a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning to help Hawaii bounce back from an 8-5 loss to the Cougars last Saturday during the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament. Following Heen's home run, sophomore Brittnee Rossi walked to get on base and Gandia-Mak dropped a hit into right-center field for her first RBI double of the game.

SIUE closed the gap in the top of the fifth inning with Hawaii still leading 4-3, but in the bottom half, Gandia-Mak dropped in another double — ths time to left-center field to score Heen for an insurance run.

In the top of the seventh, Alana Cobb-Adams (Kamehameha '17) slapped a leadoff hit up the middle to get on base, but Dino downed SIUE in order to close the game out for her sixth win of the year as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 16-6 on the season.

The Cougars roster featured three Hawaii high school grads with shortstop Cobb-Adams, third baseman Kalei Kaneshiro (Kamehameha '16) and designated player Sammie Ofoia (Saint Francis '18).

Cobb-Adams and Kaneshior both batted 1 for 4 on the night while Ofoia went 0 for 1.

Hawaii will take on Utah (10-13) Tuesday evening before hosting the Bank of Hawaii Wahine Classic set to run the Wednesday through Saturday where they'll play Niagara twice, SIUE one more time and then Alabama for a two-game slate. The Rainbow Wahine will then have nearly two weeks off before beginning Big West Conference play against Long Beach State on March 29.
