Yonamine, Faleafine-Lesu lead weekly standouts

Male Athlete of the Week: Micah Yonamine, Iolani baseball
Micah Yonamine isn't afraid to blaze his own path.

Yonamine, a senior and third-year player on the second-ranked Iolani baseball team, will cap a decorated prep career this spring before taking his talents to … Normal, Illinois?

"One thing about Micah that's really, really good about him is he's not afraid of going away," Raiders coach Kurt Miyahira said. "Micah is confident in who he is. He can be alone by himself and not care. That's why, I think, Illinois State is a good fit for him."

Miyahira said the Redbirds, who played a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium against Hawaii last year, hired Dane Fujinaka, a 2011 Mid-Pacific alum who went on to play collegiately at Sacramento State, as an assistant coach prior to the start of this season.

There remains the possibility that Yonamine, who put on about 20 pounds this offseason to his 6-foot-4 frame, could get taken in this summer's MLB first-year player draft.

"I really hope someone takes him in this draft. He's gonna hit, no matter what level he's gonna hit and he's gonna turn into a fine catcher. He's been working every day at it, whether it's blocking balls from the machine or throwing, and he's a really good student, too," Miyahira said.

Yonamine earned All-Hawaii First Team honors behind the plate as a junior last season and is picking up this year where he left off last.

Through the first four games of league play, Yonamine has a .538 batting average and has driven in 10 runs. In a 14-7 win over Saint Louis Thursday, he batted 3 for 4, including a pair of momentum-shifting home runs, to drive in seven runs.

"I'm not surprised by it. Micah is probably one of the best pure hitters I've seen in a long time. It's a credit to him; he works extremely hard. He has an approach, he sticks to it and just believes in what he works in," Miyahira said.

Yonamine singled to right center in his first at-bat to bring in the game's first run, but the Crusaders pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. With a pair of runners aboard his next time up, Yonamine homered to center fielder to put the Raiders back ahead in the top of the third, 4-2.

After striking out looking his third AB, Yonamine tallied three more RBIs with another three-run homer in the fifth to stretch the Iolani lead to 11-7.

"Both home runs came at crucial times, even his first RBI put us up, 1-0, so they all came at important times of the game," Miyahira said.

Miyahira said Yonamine's second home run came off an off-speed pitch.

"It hung a little, but it was pretty deep. He hit it pretty good," he said.

Miyahira added that Yonamine's always had a good eye in the batter's box, but has gotten even better due to a tireless work ethic.

"He's constantly a student of the game, always trying to master his craft and he never gets too high, never gets too low, it's just what the situation presents and I think that's the strength of him. He's always watching film and studying. Even when we do (batting practice), it's not just to hit the ball or how hard can I hit the ball, it's trying to work on something and not being so worried about the result, but working on what he's working on, and that's what separates him from a regular high school kid, and his ability to make adjustments," Miyahira said. "He's always had a good idea of the pitches he can handle and I just think he's getting better at tightening up the swing path and he continues to get better because he just works."

Yonamine's regimen includes early-morning weight lifting sessions with many of his teammates.

"He's there in the morning, 5:30 in the morning at school, a bunch of them are there working out. Micah's really dedicated; he's been getting after it and it shows. He's put the weight mostly in his legs, a lot of it, so it's some good weight he put on," Miyahira said.

To be sure, Yonamine's success hasn't been achieved without that of his teammates, many of whom are now third-year starters.

"He's just a great kid, who leads by example. He's not a real vocal guy, but he leads by example, whether it's in the classroom or the weight room, he's very, very helpful," Miyahira said. "Micah is a really good teammate, always willing to help with the younger guys and that goes for almost all of our seniors. They're willing and serve as very good role models and I can't be happier for that group of guys."

Yonamine, who has hit safely in all four games this season, batted 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 12-6 win over fifth-ranked Kamehameha.

The Raiders (4-0) will host Maryknoll Thursday before taking on Damien at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Saturday morning.

Female Athlete of the Week: Maiyah Faleafine-Lesu, Pearl City softball
The future is bright for Maiyah Faleafine-Lesu and the Pearl City softball team, but last week was pretty good, too.

Faleafine-Lesu, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, was the pitcher of record in a pair of wins for the Chargers last week in the ever-competitive OIA Division I West. Last Tuesday, she tossed a complete game in a 10-4 win over Aiea. Faleafine-Lesu allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. In a 1-0 win at Kapolei Friday, she pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts against four walks.

"She did enough to get us the wins," Pearl City coach Chad Obara said. "She works hard on her craft, but the consistency has been a struggle and so all we've been asking her to do is put her best effort out there and that's what she's been doing and it gets the job done when we need it to get done."

The right-handed Faleafine-Lesu helped her own cause against Na Alii. She batted 2 for 4 out of the clean-up spot, with a double and three RBI. Her third-inning single to right field scored Taylor Au to give her team a 4-2 lead. An inning later, Faleafine-Lesu lined a double to center to score both Braelynn Kaulu-Choy Foo and Jewel Larson to stretch it to a 9-2 lead for the Chargers.

"She hit the ball last year but she was a little erratic, so far I think this year she's ahead of her pace last year," Obara said. "This year she's had her moments and she's been a little more consistent this year, at this point anyway. I think she's starting to figure it out."

The win came one week after a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Mililani to open the regular season, in which Faleafine-Lesu was the losing pitcher. She was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout in four innings pitched.

Faleafine-Lesu batted 0 for 2 with a walk against the Hurricanes Friday, but was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk in a 9-5 loss to top-ranked Campbell Tuesday afternoon.

"That Mililani game was a shootout and we took care of business with Aiea and then we took care of business with Kapolei and then we had a tied ball game, 5-5 going into the seventh against Campbell and then the wheels came off a little bit, but I cannot deny my team's effort and that's all we've been focusing on," Obara said.

The Chargers are young — they start six sophomores and three juniors — in a division that contains no pushover teams, but they are largely keeping the blinders on.

"We've been really emphasizing the things we're in control of, which is our effort and the mental side of it, so I think we've been putting out our best effort every game and it's been showing. The main thing is that we're improving," Obara said.

Faleafine-Lesu's growth in the pitching circle will certainly be tied to any team success.

"She's been improving a lot, as far as bouncing back from when things go downhill, letting go of the past and focusing on the moment. She's made a big improve from last year to this year, so there's progress, but she still could get better," Obara said.

Obara said a year of varsity softball under Faleafine-Lesu's belt has sped up the growth process.

"I used to avoid the age thing, but I've been noticing that mentally and as far as softball IQ and dealing with adversity, that maturity level does make a big difference and I think she's grown a lot in one year's time, so I like her progress," Obara said.

With more than two full seasons ahead of Faleafine-Lesu, Obara believes she can become among the top players in the state.

"I keep telling her that she has to see herself as potentially one of the most feared players and she's getting there, definitely at the plate, but slowly getting there in the circle, too," Obara said. "I think she spins the ball pretty well, but her velocity is something we've been working on and I think she's capable of a lot, it's just a matter of us getting her to trust herself and her giving her max effort into the pitches she's throwing. Sometimes she gets too cautious in what she's doing, but overall the improvement from last year to this year is massive."

Faleafine-Lesu had to trust her stuff against Kapolei Friday, especially when she ran in some trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning.

"We ended up intentionally walking the bases loaded and she got the routine fly ball to get out of the inning, so she worked through some adversity, but it goes back to her being able to regain her composure and stay in the moment and focus on what's in front of her instead of worrying about what's ahead," Obara said.

As a freshman last year, Faleafine-Lesu earned All-OIA D1 West honorable mention. This season she has a 2-2 record with a 3.30 ERA and is carrying a .286 batting average.

"I think things are slowly falling into place for her and I'm thinking by the end of this year and going into next year she'll be up there with names to be reckoned with," Obara said.

The Chargers (2-2), ranked ninth in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, visit No. 3 Waianae Friday afternoon.
