UPDATE: It was later ruled that Saint Francis used an ineligible player and thus had to forfeit this game as a result.
PEARL CITY — With one of its best player sidelined for most of the night with an injury, the Saint Francis football team banded together to pick up its fourth straight win.
The Saints recorded four picks and four sacks and Bubba Akana threw two touchdown passes to power Saint Francis over Pearl City, 27-13, in a Division II inter-league matchup Friday at Bino Neves Stadium.
Junior running back Jonan "Bubbah" Aina-Chaves entered the game as the leading rusher in the state with 653 yards, but had to be carted off the field after hurting his right ankle on a 46-yard burst down the sideline late in the first quarter.
"The prognosis at this point is it's not broken, not dislocated, we're going to get X-rays tomorrow," Saint Francis coach Kip Akana said of Aina-Chaves' injury after the game.
"It's tough losing a player like that, but I thought the other players step up and did the best we could."
Fortunately for the Saints (4-0 overall, 2-0 ILH D2), they held a 8-0 lead before Aina-Chaves went down thanks to Shepherd Kekahuna's 52-yard interception return on Pearl City's first pass play of the game.
The defensive score set the tone for the night as Pearl City (2-2, 2-0 OIA D2) could never get anything going until the fourth quarter.
"That first quick pick I thought was big because that's momentum," said Pearl City coach Robin Kami. "In this high school age, whoever scores first kind of gets that momentum, more so on a turnover, so we gave them that momentum from the get go."
Kekahuna also had another interception in the second half and caught three passes for a game-high 101 yards to lead the Saints in Aina-Chaves' absence.
"We just have to step us as leaders and lead the team, got to make sacrifices for each other," Kekahuna said. "We just have to trust each other and play as a team and put God first."
In the trenches Tapena Tuitupou and Sione Lolohea led the way with three sacks and a game-high 8 1/2 tackles respectively. Kordell Ng also had two picks to round out the top defenders for the Saints.
On offense, Saint Francis got TD receptions by Alden Rosa and Makana Poole and Kain Lyman scored on a 5-yard run to give Saint Francis the necessary points to beat Pearl City.
Pearl City's lone score of the first half came on a double pass play with receiver Micah Quillopo-Jamile finding Jordan Oshiro for a 19-yard TD.
The Chargers would not find the end zone again until Makana Canyon found Thomas King for a 10-yard score with 31.4 left in regulation.
"The offense struggled a little bit and you have to give credit to the Saint Francis defense, they're fast and strong and they kept attacking us," said Kami.
Nuusegi Afoa had two interceptions in the fourth quarter to lead the Chargers on defense.
Saint Francis will have a week off before taking on PAC-5 (1-1) while Pearl City hosts McKinley (1-3, 0-2) next Friday.
