A 19-day layoff had little to no effect on the Iolani girls volleyball team in its ILH Division I season opener Thursday night.

The Raiders took care of visiting Maryknoll in straight sets at Lower Gymnasium for a 25-9, 25-13 win in their first match since winning the annual Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Aug. 11.

Junior outside hitter Elena Oglivie, a two-time All-Hawaii First Team selection, hit .563 for the match and led the way with 10 kills. Izzy Sakoda added five more and Kristen McDaniel did a little bit of everything with 18 assists, four digs, three blocks with kill and an ace to power Iolani (1-0).

The Raiders, who reached the state championship match the past three seasons, looked like their were in midseason form in the opening game. Iolani executed at a high rate in the first set, which was highlighted by Oglivie's five kills on six swings. The team also had zero hitting errors and saw seven players register a kill in the opening game.

"Our kids were eager to get out," said Iolani coach Kainoa Obrey. "They're hungry to get on the court, they're hungry to play a match. School started for a couple of weeks now and we've been practicing so its' nice to put on the jersey, to have our fans, our supporters and our families here just cheering us on. It's a good feeling."

Obrey also liked that his team's offense had multiple contributors.

"We got kills from multiple people and that's kind of what our goal is," he said. "We try to move the ball around and score from different parts on the net and put more pressure on the other team, and that's what we're trying to get to."

While Iolani lost just one senior to graduation, the Spartans (0-1) are rebuilding after having a senior-laden team in 2017. Maryknoll's lone junior in the rotation last year, All-Hawaii Second Team selection Natalie Nava Minjarez, also transferred out and returned to play for the Mexico national team.

"We are in a transition process, we're rebuilding our program," said Maryknoll coach Luis Ramirez. "We want to be challenged and play at a Division I level. We want to challenge ourselves."

One of the Spartans' biggest losses to graduation include multi-year starting setter Jhenna Gabriel, who now plays for the University of Texas. Sophomore Hiilani Burgess-Correia took the first rotation at setter and had six assists, but senior Leiana Leong and freshman Paige Nakanelua also got in the action with five and three assists respectively.

In terms of leadership and offense, Ramirez is expecting seniors Kiana Valdez and Cara Bolte to anchor the group. Valdez did her part with seven kills and five digs, but Bolte struggled to get into any rhythm offensively. Bolte, who is the tallest player on the team at 6-foot-2, had just two kills against six hitting errors.

"I am expecting Cara to have a much better game (next time) than what she had today," said Ramirez. "If we're going to be competitive, she's going to have to pick up a lot of the load offensively."

The Spartans did show improvement in the second set as they were able to dig up a lot more Iolani's attacks.

"We always expect Maryknoll to be tough, they're well coached and they're scrappy," said Obrey. "They made some really great digs and scramble plays and they made us earn some points.

Starting libero Tani Hoke led Maryknoll's backcourt effort with seven digs. Danielle Queja and Rosalyn Cabuena also were key with six digs apiece.

The Raiders will next play Punahou on Saturday afternoon while Maryknoll has a full week off before hosting Kamehameha next Thursday evening.
