Male Athlete of the Week: David Nakamura, Waiakea baseball
David Nakamura has been getting the job done with the bat or the ball in his hand for the Waiakea baseball this season.

The pitcher/right fielder is carrying a healthy .471 batting average to go with his 4-0 record and 0.32 earned run average his senior season.

Nakamura has hit safely in 10 of the Warriors' 12 games this season with 16 hits, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored in 34 at-bats. On the mound he has surrendered just one run on nine hits with 30 strikeouts against six walks in 22 innings pitched.

Waiakea coach Rory Inouye said Nakamura's complete-game seven-hit shutout win over Kamehameha in the semifinals of last year's state tournament gave him a huge boost of confidence in 2018.

"That has built a confidence in him that has pushed him to where he is this year," said Inouye, who added that Nakamura was a member of the Nobu Yamauchi Senior team from Hilo that won the 19-under RBI World Series in Cincinnati last August.

"All of that has just, I think, given him confidence to be our ace and take this team to as high as we can go."

Nakamura recorded 10-strikeout games in wins over Honokaa and Kamehameha-Hawaii earlier in the season. His latest performance was another gem.

Nakamura tossed a five-inning no-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks to lead Waiakea to a 10-0 win over Keaau Friday in the opening game of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I playoffs.

"He threw a lot of strikes," Inouye said. "He worked efficiently and that's been the biggest jump from last year to this year. He's throwing a lot more strikes and he's trusting his defense."

Nakamura recorded first-pitch strikes to 12 of the 17 batters he faced Friday. Thirty-three of his 48 pitches were for strikes. He was directly involved in two of the six ground-ball outs he forced, including a 3-6-1 double play in the top of the fifth inning.

"David works hard at practice during our pitcher-fielding practices and for him to execute on a timely double play just shows all the other teammates what we do in practice and how hard David works, and that it pays off in the game," Inouye said.

Inouye said Nakamura's repertoire includes a natural two-seam fast ball, a cutter, palm ball and a change-up.

"His fast ball and his change-up have been working lately, so he's mixing up speeds and just being a smart pitcher," Inouye said. "He's not overpowering, but he does have a sneakiness to his fast ball and good movement."

The 5-foot-8 lefty also produced at the plate against the Cougars. He went 2 for 3 from the third spot in the lineup. In his first at-bat, Nakamura hit a double to the opposite field to bring in a pair of base runners. He followed that up with a two-out RBI-triple to right field an inning later.

"He's been real consistent offensively for us all year and his ability to go to all fields really is his strength. He has a good eye and I just think if he's pitching well and he's hitting well, they go off of each other, so he's playing with confidence," Inouye said.

Inouye, a math teacher at the school, added that Nakamura's ability to buckle down in tough situation has served him and the team well this year.

"I think he's a pretty mentally strong kid. Knowing him for the four years in varsity and knowing him in school, he's disciplined in both and he's a good teammate," Inouye said. "He picks guys up and he has that mindset of doing what he can without doing too much and that goes with the rest of the team. David knows that the rest of them can play defense behind him and he doesn't have to do everything by himself.

The Warriors, who moved up two spots to No. 4 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, have locked up a return trip to the state tournament. They reached the state final last year before losing to Maui by a score of 6-1.

"That has given all the boys that confidence that we can get there, that we can hang around with teams and they put in the work this offseason. They were in the weight room, they were working hard and when you get to the state tournament it's a matter of playing good baseball, but it's also a matter of being lucky, so the boys just want another opportunity to get there and hopefully everything falls into place," Inouye said.

Waiakea went on to beat Keaau again on Saturday, 12-1 in six innings, to move on to the BIIF championship series against cross-town rival Hilo at Wong Stadium this weekend.

"David and all the seniors really have led this team and have been great examples," Inouye said. "As far as we can go this year, I know our senior class will be the ones to take us there."

The Warriors and Vikings open the best-of-3 series Friday.

Nakamura, who aspires to become an Air Force pilot, is expected to get the starting nod on the mound in the opener.

Female Athlete of the Week: Kennedy Ishii, Punahou softball
First-year coach David "Boy" Eldredge believes that a large part of the success that his Punahou softball team is experiencing this season can be traced to the unselfish attitudes of its players.

One of those who have put team before self is senior pitcher/shortstop Kennedy Ishii. The 5-foot-4 senior has embraced a new role of starting pitcher, while continuing to excel as the second batter in the Buffanblu lineup.

Ishii, a third-year varsity player, saw her role go from predominantly a position player to that of staff ace this season.

"She's such a competitor," Eldredge said of Ishii. "She just keeps competing and the more she's throwing, the more comfortable she's getting. She's gotten stronger throughout the year, she's gotten better and she completes through tough situations."

To say that Ishii has excelled would be an understatement. She leads the team in innings pitched (46 1/3), wins (5) and strikeouts (23). Her latest victory came in 12-2 rout of Iolani Wednesday in which she scattered five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over six innings of work.

"Throughout the season her composure just gets better and better. I think for all pitchers throughout the (Interscholastic League of Honolulu), they all seem to have that one hiccup or two throughout a game and it's how they manage to get through that and manage through innings and she's getting better at that," Eldredge said.

In her first appearance this season, Ishii allowed seven runs in just two innings in a relief appearance against Kamehameha to open the season back on Feb. 28. She was charged as the losing pitcher in the 17-7 five-inning defeat.

However, Ishii has been the winning pitcher in four of the last five games she has pitched in.

"Her strike ratio is going up because she's being a little bit more consistent there and she's believing in her change-up so we're able to throw that a little bit and I'm learning quickly that in softball and this league that the change-up makes a big difference because every other pitch is hard compared to baseball, where even the curveball is a soft pitch, to that change-up is important and she's believing in it more."

On top of her work in the pitching circle against the Raiders last week, Ishii batted 2 for 3 with a double, walk and three runs scored.

For the season Ishii is batting at a .394 clip. Half of her 16 base hits have gone for extra bases. She has driven in 12 runs and scored 16 times. Ishii has reached base in all 12 games. She has failed to record a hit in a game only twice this year.

"I think coming into the season that was her role, to be our number-two hitter and be one of our go-to girls offensively," Eldredge said. "She was in the middle of our infield as our shortstop so she already came in with a major role to play in regards to defense and offense and when we switched up the roles and said, ‘Oh, by the way, we're going to throw you in there a little more on the mound,' but it's not much of an adjustment for her on the offensive side."

Ishii, an ILH second team all-star last season, is one of seven Buffanblu bats amongst the top 20 batting averages in the league. Ishii bats behind leadoff hitter Maya Matsubara (.400) and in front of D'Asha Saiki (.629) and clean-up hitter Bailey Akimseu (.394). The fifth batter, Janell Sato (.441), has been a key contributor at the plate, but moreso in her role behind the plate as the team's catcher.

"Janell has been huge. Janell and Kawai (Mielke) have been co-team captains for two years now and the girls really respect them and believe in their leadership. I think there's a reason they both play up the middle as catcher and center fielder and I think that's a whole ‘mother aspect of our success, is just the kind of leadership we have out of those two girls," Eldredge said.

Akimseu, a four-year varsity player along with Sato and Mielke, has also excelled in her new role. Her 23 runs driven in rank second in the ILH only to Saiki's 24.

"It's a very close team and it's definitely a very close senior class, but in seasons like this it's not just about the talent you put on the field, it's about people accepting roles and sacrificing here and there," Eldredge said. "What Bailey did to put more emphasis on hitting and seeing herself as someone who gets the ball late in games was huge. It's really big that she took on that role and that Kennedy accepted her new role. Both of them have been really good with the direction that we gave."

Both Ishii and Sato have signed to play at Division-III Bates College (Lewiston, Maine) next year.

The victory over Iolani gave Punahou the ILH D1 first-round title and clinched its first state-tournament berth since 2013, when it won the whole thing.

The Buffanblu (9-3) have won six of their last seven games, including a string of four straight.

"We're excited where we're at, we're excited about that we're peeking at the right time and hopefully we'll keep it up," Eldredge said.

Punahou will host Iolani in an ILH second-round game Thursday at 4 p.m.
