Kaiser took an early lead on Aiea Wednesday afternoon and never looked back.

The Cougars posted 10 hits and were aided by four Na Alii errors in an 8-3 win in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I baseball tournament.

Kaiser, the fourth seed out of the Eastern Division, improved to 8-5 on the season and will visit West top-seeded Campbell in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday.

Aiea, the West fifth seed, dropped its third consecutive game to end the season with a 5-8 record.

The Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Na Alii committed three errors in the frame.

"That definitely took some pressure off of us and helped us settle in a lot quicker," Kaiser coach Kila Kaaihue said.

Aiea got on the board on Trey DePonte's RBI-double to score Jacob Filio in the top of the second, but the home team answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Dyball drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on Brock Perreira's single. Dyball scored on a Kennedy Chun single to left field and one batter later, Landon Shigeta singled to right center to move Perreira over to third. Perreira scored on a wild pitch to stretch the Kaiser lead to 6-1.

Logan Ho drove in Chase Ling with his third-inning double to cut the deficit to four runs, but Jace Okamoto scored on Perreira's two-out single in the bottom of the third to again make it a four-run lead for the Cougars.

Chun was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Gyson Oshiro.

Aiea closed out the scoring with Filio's RBI-single to score Ho, who led off the sixth inning with a triple.

Ho batted 2 for 4 and Jake Nakamoto was 2 for 3 for Na Alii. Filio allowed three earned runs on eight hits with three walks in three innings of work and was charged with the loss. Teron Kitashima allowed one run on two hits in three innings of relief.

Pono Lyman was the winning pitcher after throwing just 55 pitches in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

"We kept him under our pitch limit so he can come back after two days, or definitely by that third day, if we need him," Kaaihue said.

Lyman improved to 4-0 on the season with a 2.60 ERA. He threw 33 pitches for strikes and registered first-pitch strikes to 10 of the 18 batters he faced.

"He did what he had to do," Kaaihue said. "It wasn't in our game plan (to pull Lyman in the fifth inning), but the offense did a good job to give him some run support and I was comfortable bringing in Brandon (Chung-Ming) at that point."

Chun-Ming allowed one run and scattered three hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Seven of the eight outs he got were via flyouts.

"He's a freshman and he did exactly what we asked him to do: no free bases, no free passes, make them hit the ball, make them put the ball in play, throws strikes and he did that," Kaaihue said.

Perreira (2 for 4), Shigeta (2 for 4) and Dyball (2 for 2) each paired hits for the Cougars.

The teams combined for six errors.

"We swing the bat well today," senior catcher Antonio Omphroy said. "Had a couple errors on defense that we need to clean up. Campbell is going to be tough tomorrow so we just gotta play better baseball."

The Sabers (11-1) enter Thursday's quarterfinal round riding a nine-game winning streak and ranked third in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings.

"They are the (West) number one seed for a reason," Kaaihue said. "They are a good team. They've got great pitching, they play really good defense and they hit enough obviously because they are in the position they are in now. The West is no easy division and they are on top of that division for a reason."

The teams met twice in the 2017 postseason. Campbell beat Kaiser in the OIA quarterfinals, 4-2, and again in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation State Championships 13 days later by a score of 5-4.
