HAWAII KAI — Christiana Aholelei batted 2 for 3 and drove in three runs and Primrose Aholelei scattered eight hits in a complete-game pitching effort as Kaiser upended No. 7 Roosevelt, 6-4, at the Cougars home field Tuesday afternoon.

Kaiser improved to 6-0 to assume sole possession of first place in the seven-team Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East standings.

"It's a big win for us," Cougars coach Mitch Matsumoto said. "The girls are happy, all the coaches are all happy and we feel like we're doing everything right so far with the kind of personnel that we have."

Roosevelt took its first loss of the season to fall to 5-1.

The Rough Riders sit alone in second place at the midway point of the 12-game regular season, one-half game ahead of third-place Moanalua.

Christiana Aholelei, a senior first baseman, put her team ahead in the bottom of the first inning by plating Tahani Kahawai-Robertson and Ivane Aholelei with a two-out, first-inning double off of Roosevelt pitcher Jaeda Cabunoc.

Cabunoc's solo homer in the top of the fourth got the Rough Riders on the board. They tied it an inning later when Logan Brown scored on a two-out error, but the Cougars answered with three runs — all coming with two outs — in the bottom of the frame.

Tehani Keola-Aquino and Kahawai-Robertson scored on Primrose Aholelei's single to left. The very next batter, Christiana, also singled to left to bring in her younger sister, Primrose.

Kaiser added an insurance run in the sixth inning on Ivane Aholelei's two-out single back up the middle to score Nala Dombrowski.

Angel-Leigh Ching cut the Cougars lead in half with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh. Leadoff hitter Maya Nakamura then doubled to left to bring the tying run to the plate in Kylie Kawamura.

Kawamura popped out on an infield fly for the first out of the inning. Nakamura attempted to take third base on the play but was ruled out on an appeal by Matsumoto.

"It's the look-back rule. (Nakamura) advanced to third. Roosevelt claimed that our pitcher did not have the ball in the (pitcher's) circle, but we had the ball in the circle so she couldn't advance and that's why she was called out," Matsumoto explained. "That was an umpire's call and that's what they saw."

The Rough Riders again got the potential tying run on the plate in Cabunoc after a two-out Tiana Sniffen single through the left side. However, Primrose Aholelei got Cabunoc to pop out in foul territory to Christiana to end the game.

"This team is pretty special. They fight back and they don't give up," Matsumoto said. "They have that ‘two outs, so what?' mentality and so they score with two outs."

Primrose, a junior pitcher, struck out four and walked one to go to 5-0 on the season with an ERA of 2.13. Three of the four runs she was charged with were earned.

Matsumoto took the victory with cautious optimism, noting a distinct home-field advantage that played to his team's favor Tuesday.

"I tell you what though, the next time we play them, I'm pretty sure it will be a different story. Kaiser's field, the wind holds the ball up a lot and the outfielders can make some easy plays, (but) the next time they might hit some home runs," Matsumoto said. "And our pitcher was off today, Primrose. She didn't have her best stuff. Maybe we were lucky, I don't know."

Three of the four Aholelei's in the lineup collected six of the Cougars seven total hits off of Cabunoc and were responsible for driving in all six runs. Ivane, Primrose and Christiana each batted 2 for 3, while Precious Aholelei went 0 for 3 but drew a walk and scored a run.

Cabunoc walked four and struck out two over six innings pitched to go to 3-1 on the year with a 0.91 ERA. Only two of the six runs she surrendered with earned.

"We thought we could (get hits off of Cabunoc)," Matsumoto said. "That's just the way we felt going in and she didn't seem to have her best stuff today either."

Each team committed two errors.

It was the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams. They will close out the regular season against one another on April 14 at Stevenson Middle School field.

Both teams continue OIA D1 East play Saturday. Kaiser will host Farrington (0-6) at 9 a.m., while Roosevelt will visit Kailua (3-3) at 10 a.m.
