Male Athlete of the Week: Stone Parker, Kailua baseballOn the mound or in the batter's box, Stone Parker has been a clutch performer for the Kailua baseball team this season.
Last week he did more of the same.
The 6-foot-4 right-handed Parker put forth a dominating pitching performance in a 13-0 home victory over Kalaheo Wednesday and followed that up with a five-RBI effort at the plate in Saturday's 12-2 road victory over Roosevelt.
"He's done a lot for us," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said of Parker, a fourth-year varsity player. "He's throwing a lot more strikes than he ever did. His arm is injury-free. I feel like he's finally healthy. That's why in years past he didn't hit and we'd just focus on his arm and his health for his arm."
Against the Mustangs, Parker was simply stellar. He struck out 12 batters and did not allow a walk. Of the four batters who were able to put the ball in play against Parker, only one recorded a hit.
Despite recording a season high in strikeouts, Parker was able to keep his pitch count down to an efficient 64 pitches. He threw all but 14 of them for strikes and registered first-pitch strikes to 12 of the 18 batters he faced.
"His strike percentage against Kalaheo was really impressive — and that's using all of his pitches," Ishigo said. "He wasn't just using one pitch; he was using all five of them. I feel like he could pitch in college with that kind of stuff and command of all his pitches."
Ishigo said Parker's repertoire includes a fastball, curve, change-up, slider and sinker.
"We started working on the five from last year. At the time, his sinker was still developing and his slider was still a work in progress, but I think now he has command of all his pitches."
Parker improved to 2-0 on the season and has yet to allow a run in 10 innings of work. He has struck out a total of 18 batters against just one walk and surrendered only two hits.
"His first outing against Moanalua he was still fighting with his mechanics, but it's a continuous work in progress that we try to do daily and he's such a good kid that he's willing to do whatever he needs to do to be a better player. That includes hitting when he's not pitching," Ishigo said. "He's totally fine with that even though he understands that he's a pitcher and primarily that's what he's doing to do in college."
Parker came on to the prep baseball scene as a freshman four years ago, when he recorded a 4.45 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched with a modest 1-0 record. The following year he saw limited playing time due to injuries and logged just 1 1/3 innings all season. However, he posted a 3-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in 23 1/3 innings pitched as a junior last year on his way to Second Team All-Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East honors.
Ishigo said a slight adjustment in Parker's delivery in the offseason has paid dividends so far this year.
"It started from last year when we started changing his arm angle to focus on his elbow being free of tension when he throws and it feels good now and he's healthy," Ishigo said.
Parker has also been a diligent study in the weight room, which has helped him boast a .667 batting average this season despite hitting from the eighth spot in the order on days that he does not pitch.
"I think that's the biggest surprise is Stone's hitting," Ishigo said. "Before he would try to hit a ball a mile long — which he can — but we toned it down to where he's swinging at 80 percent and just trying to make contact with the ball and realizing that he has so much power with just 80 percent that he doesn't need to swing hard."
Parker, who can also play in the outfield, put that power on display against the Rough Riders. He crushed a grand slam that was part of a seven-run fourth inning that helped break the game open for the Surfriders.
"It wasn't what he did with that pitch; it was our approach from the beginning of the season for Stone," Ishigo said. "I'm just telling him to slap the ball, but with his strength he can slap the ball over the fence. Once he tries swinging hard he starts swinging and missing, so we're just calling it a slap, (but) his slaps go pretty far."
Parker, who is signed with the University of Kansas, drove in five runs and also drew a walk in the win Saturday to help Kailua go to 5-0 and remain in sole possession of first place in the OIA D1 East standings.
Parker and the Surfriders, who are ranked fifth in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, visit Kaiser Wednesday before hosting Moanalua Saturday.
Female Athlete of the Week: Sammie Ofoia, Saint Francis softballOne would be hard-pressed to overstate the value of Sammie Ofoia to the Saint Francis softball team.
The 5-foot-10 senior has been a mainstay at the corner infield positions — and in the heart of the order — for the Saints the last four seasons and once again proved her worth in a pair of key victories last week.
Ofoia batted 2 for 4, including a fourth-inning grand slam to lead Saint Francis to a 9-3 road win at Punahou Wednesday. Three days later, she went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, a double and three runs scored in a 9-0 win over PAC-5.
"She's been hitting the ball pretty well, but I think this year the difference with her is she's a lot more patient," Saints coach Randy Langsi said of Ofoia, who is signed with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsvillege.
"She's taking the count deep, whereas when she was younger she'd be a little more anxious — and of course, that's every young player that comes through — but maturity has been key, that's what I've noticed a little bit."
Ofoia's grand slam against the Buffablu turned a one-run lead into a five-run advantage before Saint Francis added an insurance run in the frame.
"It was a closer game," Langsi recalled. "We had the bases loaded at times (earlier in the game) and there were a couple times that we had the bases loaded with no outs and came up empty so that was disappointing, but we had the bases loaded again and this time she hit a grand slam; It was pretty amazing."
Langsi was unable to recall the count on Ofoia or the pitch location, but really it mattered little.
"The bases were loaded and from a coach's standpoint, I'm thinking she's going to get a hold of one eventually," Langsi said. "I didn't know what Punahou was going to do in that situation, whether it be pitch to her or whatever, but I think for her it was just a' see ball, hit ball' kind of thing. She just took whatever came to her. That's really all I can say — I don't think there was much of a thought process in that. It was just see ball, hit ball and it just took off — there was nothing scientific about that. she kept it simple, but when it's a tight situation like that with the bases loaded and Sammie is coming up, you kind of hold your breath to see what she's going to do with it."
Ofoia is certainly no newcomer to the scene. As a freshman in 2015, she posted a .464 batting average with 26 hits, 19 runs scored and 27 RBI in 56 at-bats. She had 15 extra-base hits that year, including seven home runs.
She followed that up with a .477 batting average with 21 hits, 21 runs scored and 15 RBI in 44 at-bats as a sophomore before batting .425 with 17 hits, 15 runs scored and 21 RBI in 40 at-bats last season.
Langsi said as pitchers have adjusted to Ofoia over the years, the slugger has worked to counter that.
"I think she's noticed that they pitch around her and so she's had to adjust her swing accordingly so she's been working on that, but it also helps to have good hitters around her, Langsi said. "We've been trying to build around Sammie's fourth spot (in the line) with the players we have, so the team itself is a good hitting team, but I think it also helps her because they just can't pitch around her because we've got people behind her and in front of her."
Ofoia, the clean-up hitter, is sandwiched in the lineup by fellow seniors Skye Ah Yat and Kolbee Kealoha. The trio have become a source of leadership for the team, each in her own way.
"With Sammie it's moreso what she does on the field than being that verbal, vocal person — I have Skye Ah Yat that does that and Kolbee Kealoha is one of them too, but as far as Sammie, she's just pretty much being her and just doing what she does on the field; that's her way of leading the team. She's very workmanlike," Langsi said.
The Saints have won their last three games since an 0-2 start in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Ofoia did not play in their two losses to open the year.
"She missed the first two games because she had SATs, so she actually didn't play until our third game, but she's been pretty steady on the defensive side as well as the offensive side," Langsi said. "It's pretty intimidating to other teams to have her in there and it's not a surprise that she's been pretty consistent. She's been doing a good job of trying to handle what comes to her. I just told her to be prepared for all these change-ups and outside pitches, but she's been hitting the change-ups well. She's expecting it, too, so I think that's where the patience comes in with picking and choosing your pitches and that kind of thing."
Ofoia, who can also play third base but has predominantly anchored first this season, is a three-time All-Hawaii First Team selection. Replacing her production will not be an easy task come 2019, Langsi admitted.
"You get these kind of players that come once in a while and you just embrace it and worry about next year next year," Langsi said. "Saint Francis has a good future ahead with some good seventh- and eighth-graders coming up. I'm not saying a Sammie is in that group, but she will definitely leave a legacy as far as her four years here at Saint Francis. I don't think you can ever replace players like that; You can only hope they inspire players for the future."
Ofoia and the Saints (3-2) will look to keep the ball rolling when they take on Iolani Thursday and Maryknoll Saturday to continue ILH play.
