Early goals lead Roosevelt to defeat Kapolei

KAIMUKI — A fast four-goal first quarter by Roosevelt was enough to lead the Rough Riders to victory over Kapolei, 5-1, Saturday in an Oahu Interscholastic Association match at Kaimuki High School.

Freshman Lauren Croll led the Rough Riders with three goals on the afternoon with two of those coming a minute, 19 seconds apart in the first period. She also won all four sprints over Kapolei's Angela Silva to start each quarter with possession on offense.

Croll also assisted on the first goal to get the Rough Riders on the scoreboard.

Following a shot clock violation on Kapolei's first possession of the game, Croll tossed the ball up front to Amy Pan at the 2-meter line, who then lobbed it over goalkeeper Kalei Fale to score a minute, six seconds into the match.

Croll followed up with her two scores at the 4:02 and 2:43 marks to go up 3-0.

Counting down to under a minute left in the quarter, Anya Miranda forced a turnover that was converted into their fourth goal by Princess Gimeno from about five meters out.

The scoring stalled over the next 14 minutes in part due to adjustments made by Kapolei.

"We weren't getting the right offensive setups," Hurricanes co-head coach Dexter Lee said, whose team didn't take their first shot until under two minutes in the first period. "We kind of switched it. They didn't really get that good until the second or third quarter, so that led into stopping the counterattack."

Roosevelt took 13 shots in the second and third periods with only five of those on goal which were saved by Kapolei's Fale. As a whole, the Rough Riders took 28 shots to the Hurricanes' 13.

The Hurricanes erased the shutout with Chloe Bridgeford's 2-meter skip shot past the left side with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

Croll flushed her final goal from the 5-meter line in a man-up situation with 2:18 to go in the match.

"Definitely have to work on our shooting. It's been our problem for the past couple of years. Our shooting percentage is a little low," Roosevelt coach Sue Nishioka said. "We had a lot of counterattacks and everything, but we weren't scoring off of them. It's not like we don't have opportunities. They're just not putting the ball away."

It's a bit of a rebuilding year for Roosevelt as they return only nine of their 22 rostered players from a year ago while having to replace four All-OIA selections including Player of the Year April Gomes.

"Last year, we had a couple of really dominate players. We don't have that this year," Nishioka said, whose current squad has zero seniors. "It's more evenly balanced. I think if we play as a team, a nice unit, that's good enough to win games."

Kapolei faces a similar situation with having nine returnees out of 17 players from a year ago and replacing three All-OIA selections which includes league-leading scorer Mailani Wendt.

But Lee has already seen huge progress from game to game and said the girls are starting to realize the things coaches go over in practice.

"This game, like simple things like putting the ball underwater. That's six or seven turnovers. We tell them a 100 times a game. They probably got three goals off of that where we put the ball under and they countered it," Lee said.

"Our first game against Kaiser, we couldn't do anything," Lee continued. "From the first time to now, they're like 200 percent better. We scrimmaged Roosevelt and they just scored at will. It's still a big score, 5-1, but we were in it the whole game."

Kapolei dropped even to 2-2 and will play Moanalua (2-0) and Castle (0-3) next Saturday.

Roosevelt improved to 2-1 and plays Kailua (1-2) on Wednesday.
