KAKAAKO — Chloe Domingo scored from second base on a Kapolei fielding error with two outs in the bottom of seventh inning to lift Campbell to a 3-2 walkoff win at McKinley Tiger Softball Stadium Saturday night.

The three-time defending state champion Sabers rebounded from an 11-run season-opening loss to Leilehua Wednesday to even their record at 1-1 in the Oahu Interacholastic Association Division I West Standings.

The Hurricanes committed three errors and fell to 1-1 with the loss.

"Against Leilehua we had a wake-up call, (but) tonight they're weren't the team that they were in the Leilehua game," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "This team is young, but they can fight — I know they can fight — and they did that."

The Sabers scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, but Kapolei sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth, when it plated a pair of runs to even the score at 2-2.

However, Campbell posted a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Domingo singled up the middle and Anastasia Iosia drew a walk to set the table for Sanay-Shiraishi. The junior catcher hit a 2-2 pitch to the right side of the infield, but it mishandled by the Kapolei second baseman, allowing Domingo to score the winning run all the way from second.

"I saw outside curve, but I just knew I had to keep my hands in and go with the ball," said Sanay-Shiraishi said, who battled 2 for 4 with a double.

Sanay-Shiraishi has the unenviable task of following in the shoes of the decorated Jocelyn Alo behind the plate. Alo, a two-time First Team All-Hawaii selection and last year's Position Player of the Year, has gone on to play collegiately at Oklahoma.

"She's just a fighter. She fights back and in her, I could see a bit or Jocelyn, but she's got to get stronger and control the game better. As long as the catcher can control the game, we should in the game all the time," Hermosura said of Sanay-Shiraishi, who moved from the outfield to catcher this season.

For her part, Sanay-Shiraishi is embracing the challenge.

"It takes a lot of heart and just confidence to replace those big shoes, but we just have to play together as a team and trust in the coaches' plan," she said. "We just had to come together as one and battle as a team and bounce back (from the Leilehua loss)."

Both pitchers — Campbell's Chloe Sales and Kapolei's Cira Bartolotti — were effective in the circle.

Sales, a lefty, scattered five hits with six strikeouts against two walks in a complete game to earn the win. Against the Mules Wednesday she was tagged for 10 runs on 16 hits with five walks and one strikeout in four innings of relief.

"Our pitcher is a sophomore and we threw her in the fire and she did a hell of a job," Hermosura said.

Sales cruised along for most of the night. Only one Hurricane base runner got beyond first base in the first five innings, but she was left stranded on third to end the top of the third inning.

The sixth inning, however, was when she ran into some trouble.

Cira Bartolotti, Kayli Nakoa and Tatum Guzman hit consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. Kiley Ozaki drew an four-pitch walk to score Bartolotti and two batters later, Chasity McKean also drew an RBI walk to plate Kawena Hussey — who re-entered the game for Nakoa, a pinch hitter — for the tying run.

"It seemed like the umpire changed his strike zone," Hermosura said. "Whether it was borderline or strikes, he didn't call it. I thought when he made a mistake call and we came back with another pitch, he'd call it a strike, but you know, we get what we get and they call what they call and we've just got to deal with it."

Kapolei left the bases loaded to end the frame when Sales got Ciena Kauhi to strike out looking on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. Sales then came back to retire the top of the Kapolei lineup in order in the top of the seventh.

"Having my team behind my back and having (Sanay-Shiraishi) behind the plate and telling me to focus, it really helped a lot because I knew they would have my back," Sales said.

Campbell overcame 12 strikeouts by Bartolotti, who struck out nine and drove in five in a Kapolei's 9-2 win over Mililani Tuesday.

"We hit the ball when we needed to while facing the best pitcher in the state (Bartolotti), so it's a big confidence thing and hopefully we can stay confident and take one game at a time," Hermosura said.

Caisha Nunes drove in the Sabers' first run on a second-inning sacrifice fly that plated Iosia. Sanay-Shiraishi hit a ground-rule double in the fourth inning and came in to score on a Kapolei error.

"She was pretty tough," Sanay-Shiraishi said of Bartolotti. "We just had to stay down because we knew that her plan was to throw risers and a lot of screwballs, so we just had to stay down and focus on zone down."

Bartolotti allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. She issued three walks in the loss.

Kauhi (2 for 3) was the lone Kapolei player to pair hits.

Kapolei will host Nanakuli Tuesday, while Campbell has a bye.
