KAILUA - A pair of sophomores and a hard-nosed defensive effort powered Kailua to a 31-15 upset victory over Farrington before about 1,000 fans at the Surfriders' home field.

Quarterback Kahaku Iaea passed for 303 yards with two touchdowns and reserve running back Jarrin Young found the end zone three times as the hosts improved to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference.

"This was a huge game, this really changes the whole dynamic of the Red East for us," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "Being able to beat a top tier team - and Farrington clearly is a top-tier team - puts us in a new realm and in a good position going into the rest of the season."

Despite being held to just 12 rushing yards on 19 attempts, the Surfriders moved the ball at will for much of the night. They notched 17 first downs against the usually-stout Farrington defense, including 12 by pass. Iaea finished 25-of-36 passing with one interception. He completed his first five attempts of the game as well as 15 of his last 18.

"He really had a great game tonight," said Rosolowich of Iaea. "He showed a lot of maturity in his game and in terms of his selection of throwing and just doing a good job and give credit to the offensive line for giving him time to throw."

The Surfriders were 46 percent (6 of 13) on third downs and scored a touchdown on the only fourth-down conversion they attempted. Farrington, ranked No. 3 in this week's ScoringLive-OC16 Football Power Rankings, pounded out 218 rushing yards, but could muster just 59 yards of passing (4 of 20) with two interceptions.

"We gave up too many big plays I thought, but give credit to (Iaea) and the Kailua coaching staff, they did a good job," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.

Kailua opened the scoring on its first offensive possession, driving 55 yards on seven yards plays. Iaea threw a 25-yard pass to Ryson Lee-Kealoha on the first play of the drive and later connected with Kila Zuttermeister for 14 yards on a third-down pass to set-up Isaac Satos 1-yard touchdown run. The kick was no good and the Surfriders held a 6-0 lead.

Farrington went ahead early in the second quarter on a 22-yard pass from Jordan Hakuole to Scotland Smith. On the scoring play, Hakuole eluded the pass rush to his left and hit Smith in stride for his first - and only completion of the first half. Andrew Gangloff tacked on the PAT and the Govs led, 7-6, with six minutes and 28 seconds to play in the first half.

Iaea was intercepted on the ensuing Kailua drive by Farrington's Justin Larobis and the Govs took possession at the Kailua 28-yard line. On fourth-and-four, Gangloff took aim at a 26-yard field goal, but never attempted it after a bad snap from center to holder.

Kailua took over at its own 14-yard line with 3:45 on the clock. Iaea hooked up with Eric Lum on a 35-yard pass to convert on third-and-six to move the ball into Farrington territory. Later in the drive, the duo connected again, this time for a 38-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1. The kick was blocked to give the Surfriders a 12-7 lead at the half.

"Eric is a good receiver and we saw that he had a mismatch on that play," said Iaea, a 6-foot, 204-pound sophomore. "We planned to throw it to an area and hopefully he would catch the ball and he did."

Lum finished with five grabs for a game-high 119 yards.

The Surfriders forced a punt by Farrington to start the second half and took over at their own 38-yard line. Iaea threw a 19-yard pass to Lee-Kealoha on first down and a personal foul again the Govs on the play moved the ball to the Farrington 28-yard line.

Iaea again converted on a crucial third-down play, finding Lee-Kealoha for a 21-yard gain and two plays later, Young scored his first of two 1-yard touchdown runs. Kailua could not convert the two-point conversion run, but extended its lead to 18-7.

Later in the third quarter, the Govs faltered on special teams and the Surfriders capitalized with a 30-yard TD pass from Iaea to Young. On fourth down, the snap to punter Scotland Smith was high and he was forced to run for the first down, but was tackled for a five-yard loss and Kailua took over at the Govs' 30. Two plays later Iaea tossed a swing pass to Young, a 5-foot-7, 156-pound sophomore, who made one cut and went untouched behind a wall of blockers en route to the end zone.

"I just saw a seam and I took it," said Young, who entered in the second half after starting running back Isaac Sato left the game in the second quarter. "There was some great blocking by the o-line and great blocking by the receivers."

Sato, who did not return, was on crutches for the remainder of the game.

Kailua added a late score on Young's third score of the night. The 1-yard TD run with 8:49 left in the game made the score 31-7.

Farrington's Tavale Masalosalo closed out the scoring with a 1-yard scoring run with minutes left.

For Farrington, which fell to 4-2 and 2-2, the Windward skies have been unkind as of late. Just two weeks ago, the Govs dropped a 29-28 decision at Castle.

"I think we got out of our game plan," Okimoto said. "We should have stuck with the run more, but (Kailua) played a good game and they forced us to make all of our mistakes, so you gotta give them credit."
