Fri, Dec 15, 2017 @ Maryknoll
It wasn't pretty and someone had to do the dirty work.
Bella Cravens pulled a double-double and No. 1 Maryknoll rolled to a 46-38 win against No. 2 Kamehameha Thursday night in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I girls' basketball at the Tony Sellitto Center Court at the T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
The Spartans' 6-foot-1 center scored 11 points — eight off offensive rebounds — and snagged a game-high 13 boards to help Maryknoll (3-0) overcome 19-of-53 shooting from the field (35 percent) against the Warriors (3-1).
"That's my job," Cravens said of her domination of the boards. "I'm in there for rebounds on offense and defense, but plenty of our guards can rebound. We have big guards Kodee (Dakota Viena), Kamalu (Kamakawiwoole), Chayse (Milne) and even Moe (Notoa). They can all grab rebounds."
But the four she mentioned combined for eight.
"We need more people (to rebound)," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said. "Our guards are big. Kamalu's long, Kodee's big, Chayse is big. When we're playing zone, we need more people crashing the glass."
Still, it was a big win for Maryknoll, which will meet the Warriors again Jan. 11 at the Kapalama campus.
"Offensively, I didn't think it was a real polished game," Furtado said. "But we lean on our defense a little bit, caused them some issues with the press and using numbers. Obviously, losing Kalina (Obrey) hurts them, but that's the way it goes."
Obrey is the Warriors' 5-11 post, who injured her left metacarpal bones in a game against Iolani. Since the ILH does not play during the holiday break, the right-handed shooting Obrey might only miss one game, coach Joseph Cho said.
"That's a big factor, but we don't want to use that as an excuse," Cho said. "We wanted to come in here and beat them, even without Kalina. You know, Kalina hasn't played with us for half the season because of her ankle, so we're kind of used to to it."
Picking up the slack were Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk, who led the Warriors with 13 points, and Kiana Vierra just missed a double-double of her own with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors took a 14-13 lead after the first period and led 20-19 less than halfway through the second period. But the Spartans closed the half with a 10-2 run to take a 29-22 at the intermission.
Maryknoll pressed all night, forcing 17 turnovers. Three to start the second half led to a 7-0 run by the Spartans. Kamehameha did not get on the board in the third unitl 3:13 on a jumper by Paaluhi-Caulk. After Maryknoll made it 38-24 on basket by Chayse Milne, the Warriors ended the third period with an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to 38-32. But turnovers contined to plague the Warriors and the Spartans were able keep their lead the rest of the way.
"We're playing against an experienced team," Cho said of the Spartans, who returned all their starters from last year's ILH championship squad. "The ones that were doing the turnovers were JV kids coming up to the varsity, but, hey, they have to do the job once they're in there."
With the Warriors sitting in a zone, the Spartans were launching from behind the arc all night, but were a dismal 3 for 22.
"We were horrible," Furtado said. "We're a better shootig team than that and tonight was one of those things. We have to be able to show some patience in our half-court offense. Part of the problem is when we post the ball, we missed a couple around the bucket, like chippies."
While pleased that they won, the Spartans feel it wasn't their best outing.
"It's not the win we expected, but we'll take it," Cravens said. "I think tonight we were a little trigger happy from the 3-point line. For some reason we weren't on our best game."
