Rainbow Warriors end season with 30-20 loss to BYU

HALAWA — Squally Canada rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns to help Brigham Young to a 30-20 win over Hawaii in the season finale for both teams at HawaiianTel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.

The Cougars racked up 451 yards of total offense, including 285 rushing yards, to improve to 4-9 on the season with their fourth consecutive win over UH. BYU now leads the series 22-8 and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two schools.

Canada carried 17 times and scored on runs of 40 and 4 yards before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury just before halftime.

Austin Kafentzis (18 rushes for 98 yards) and Riley Burt (13 for 75) also contributed to the BYU ground game. Burt also scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Joe Critchlow threw for 166 yards on 14-of-23 passing, including an 11-yard TD pass to Neil Pauu late in the third quarter.

Hawaii got 258 passing yards from junior quarterback Dru Brown, completing 28 of his 38 pass attempts without an interception, but did have one giveaway in the second quarter on strip sack. Brown finished strong, throwing fourth quarter TD passes of 15 and 3 yards to Ammon Barker and Kumoku Noa (Kamehameha '16), respectively.

Despite only 28 net rushing yards, senior runnning back Diocemy Saint Juste took 12 carries for 39 yards to became UH's single-season rushing leader with 1,510 yards. He came into the game 28 yards shy of Travis Sims' record yardage of 1,498 set in 1992, and broke it on a 14-yard run with under three and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Saint Juste finishes his career with 3,102 rushing yards, second behind all-time leading rusher Gary Allen's mark of 3,451. Both are also the only rushers to amass 3,000 yards in a career for UH.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, the Rainbow Warriors got on the board after senior safety Trayvon Henderson blitzed off the edge to get the sack, popping the ball in the air into the arms of linebacker Solomon Matautia (Campbell '15) who returned it 42 yards untouched for a TD.

It was Matautia's team-leading fourth takeaway of the season and second returned for a score. The other three were interceptions. He finished the game with 10 total tackles.

BYU led at halftime, 13-7.

Cougars senior defensive lineman Handsome Tanielu (Waianae '10) recorded a tackle on a 2-yard run on Hawaii's second possession of the game.

Junior defensive linemen Kamalani Kaluhiokalani (Kamehameha '11) also participated in the game but did not get into the stat column.

The Rainbow Warriors dropped their fifth straight game to end the season with a record of 3-9. It was the first loss on Senior Night since a 41-20 loss in 2011 also against BYU.

Twenty University of Hawaii seniors made their final appearance at Aloha Stadium, and amongst them were Hawaii high school alums Frank Abreu (Saint Louis '13), Keelan Ewaliko (Baldwin '13), Austin Gerard (Kamehameha '13), Ryan Tuiasoa (Punahou '13) and John Waa (Kahuku '13).
