HALAWA — Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro accounted for five touchdowns, but it was Saint Louis' vaunted defense that got the ball rolling in a 49-13 win against Punahou Saturday night at HTFCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

It was the widest margin of victory for the Crusaders on the Buffanblu since Oct. 22, 2004, when Saint Louis won, 42-0.

Saint Louis, No. 1 in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric D1 Power Rankings, improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu D1 standings. No. 4 Punahou fell to 4-1 and 1-1.

Cordeiro completed 18 of 28 passes for 346 yards with TD completions of 9, 25 and 30 yards to Mitchell Quinn and 5 yards to Kainalu Reyes-Hackney. Cordeiro, who led his team with 32 rushing yards, also scored on a 1-yard run.

After a scoreless first period, Saint Louis' defense set the tone. A 4-yard sack by lineman Faatui Tuitele of QB Stephen Barber in the end zone early in the second period for a safety snowballed on Punahou.

"Really, offensively, we did a nice job," Saint Louis coach Cal Lee said. "Defensively as well. Just playing a guy like (Barber) is really tough to contain him. And then to get coverage. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way we played defensively."

The Crusaders sacked Barber six times, twice by Tuitele.

"We just had to contain (Barber) and keep him in the pocket," Tuitele said of the defensive effort. "Just putting the pressure, making him feel uncomfortable in the pocket, that's what we had to do.

"Our D-line, we still have a lot of work to do. We just have to get better from here on."

But a sack by Isaiah Taliulu ended Barber's night with 7:18 left in the third quarter. He apparently hurt his throwing arm (right) and never returned. Nui Adolpho and Hugh Brady finished at QB for Punahou.

"We're hoping it's a bruise," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. "It affected his throwing, so we kept him out. He wanted to go in and throw left-handed. That's the kind of courage he has and we said ‘No.'"

Ane said he never saw Barber throw left-handed, "but he can run and I don't want to see him running." The team will be awaiting his status after he visits the doctor, Ane said.

Barber finished the game completing 11 of 20 passes for 120 yards and one TD, a 5-yarder to Koa Eldredge that pulled Punahou to 19-7 with 1:20 left in the half.

Leading 40-7, Saint Louis pulled Cordeiro with 3:19 left in the third quarter for Maika Bonner, who scored on an 11-yard run.

Ironically, it was a nice defensive stand by Punahou in its field-position predicament. Saint Louis had first-and-goal at Punahou's 8, but its drive stopped at the 4. But on first down, Tuitele broke through Punahou's line and bear-hugged Barber in the back of the end zone for the safety.

The ensuing free kick, from Punahou's 20, gave Saint Louis good field position at its 39. Six plays later, Cordeiro hit Quinn on a 9-yard TD pass to put the Crusaders up 9-0 with 9:00 left in the half.

A sack by Jordan Botelho on Barber set back Punahou to its 6. Punahou, having to punt from deep in its own territory, once again gave Saint Louis favorable field position at the Punahou 49. Six plays later, Cordeiro scored on a sneak to make it 16-0 with 4:29 in the half.

Bad luck continued to pile on Punahou. On its next series, Taliulu recovered a high snap over Barber's head for a 23-yard loss to the Punahou 6. The Buffanblu defense forced the Crusaders to settle on a 22-yard field goal by Jacob Tobias to give the Saints a 19–0 lead.

Punahou scored before the half on Eldredge's TD catch, only to see Saint Louis return the score less than a minute later. Despite starting at its 15, a 70-yard pass from Cordeiro to Koali Nishigaya set up a 25-yard TD pass to Quinn with 26 seconds left in the half to make it 26-7.

Saint Louis scored TDs on its first three series of the second half in taking a 47-7 lead with 11:25 in the fourth period to initiate the running clock.

Moreover, a high snap in punt formation sailed into the end zone for another safety on Punahou to make it 49-7 with 8:53 in the game.

Punahou scored with 31 seconds left on 23-yard TD catch by Eldredge from Adolpho to pull the Buffanblu to 49-13.

Cordeiro made things happen for Saint Louis. His athleticism allowed him to scramble out of pressure - he was sacked once by Trent Shiraki - to make his passes. He also rushed for 42 yards not counting the sack.

"He's a very good player, he's very agile," Ane said of Cordeiro. "We have to breakdown and not take shots to knock him out. We have to play very fundamental football, breakdown and go from there."
