HALAWA — It was a big day for Punahou football.
Buffanblu grads running back Ryan Tuiasoa ('13) and tight end Dakota Torres ('14) contributed three total touchdowns en route to a 41-18 University of Hawaii victory over the visiting Western Carolina Catamounts at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.
The redshirt senior RB had a career day, carrying the ball 16 times for 82 yards and two scores both on 1-yard runs coming in the second and fourth quarters.
Tuiasoa's rushing total was only a fraction of the Rainbow Warriors' 299 total ground yards on the day, with 202 coming off the legs of redshirt senior Diocemy Saint Juste, who had 25 carries and a touchdown.
Although Tuiasoa's first TD to put Hawaii up 21-7 came after Saint Juste gashed the Catamounts defense for 71 yards on the drive, the 2012 First Team ILH running back did his own work for his second score of the day. He was held to just 21 yards on 10 carries before breaking runs of 11, 32, 4 and 12 yards on his way to a 1-yard plunge for the final score of the game with 7:31 left.
It was the most yards gained in a game since he totaled 49 yards in the 2015 season finale against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
On the ensuing Catamount possession, Kahuku alum Keala Santiago ('16) blitzed for a strip sack that was recovered by fellow Red Raider alum Rashaan Falemalu ('13).
2013 All-Hawaii First Team tight end Torres snagged two catches for 17 yards, hooking up with junior quarterback Dru Brown for a 9-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to extend the lead to 22 points.
Brown finished the day going 11 for 21 with two touchdowns and two interceptions on 154 yards — his lowest output since a 52-16 beatdown loss to Boise State last November.
Placekicker Alex Trifonovitch (Punahou '15) — also a 2013 All-Hawaii First Teamer — was 5 for 6 on PAT attempts with his lone blemish a block that was returned for two points coming after defensive back Trayvon Henderson's 89-yard field goal block return for a score near the beginning of the second half.
Defensive linemen Zeno Choi (Kaiser '15) and Tevarua Eldridge (Baldwin '14) combined for an assisted sack on third down of that drive which led to the blocked field goal by redshirt junior defensive lineman Meffy Koloamatangi.
Earlier in the day, the Punahou Buffanblu football team defeated Junipero Serra High School, 56-42, in the Honor Bowl in San Diego, California. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 55 in the MaxPreps National High School Football Rankings.
The Rainbow Warriors roster three Serra grads in Cameron Hayes, Malachi Mageo and Samiuela Akoteu.
Hawaii will travel to UCLA next Saturday before enjoying a bye week to prepare for its Mountain West Conference opener against Wyoming.
The next home game is Sept. 30 against Colorado State.
