MILILANI — A balanced offensive attack and a stout all-around defensive effort paved the way for a Mililani blowout Friday night.

Kilifi Malepeai rushed for two touchdowns and caught another score to lead No. 5 Mililani to a convincing 47-0 win over No. 8 Leilehua in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red Conference game at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Trojans (2-0) were in command throughout the game, taking a 27-0 lead after the first quarter and a 40-0 advantage into halftime. They amassed 499 yards of total offense and limited the Mules (1-2 overall, 0-2 league) to just 81 net yards.

"That's what we try to be, is balanced, but we'll take what they give us. They gave us the run. I think they only had like five guys in the box so we just took it." Mililani coach Rod York said.

Malepeai, a junior running back, did all of his damage in the first half. He carried 11 times for 100 yards and scored on runs of 27 and 19 yards and added two receptions for 38 yards and another touchdown.

The Trojans ran the ball 34 times and averaged 6.7 yards per attempt. Outside of two kneel-downs to end the game, only one rush went for negative yardage.

"Our o-line was blocking. We didn't leave anybody unblocked and that's what we feel, if we block everybody we'll be all right," York said of his offensive line that returns all five starters from a year ago.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for 266 yards and two scores on 18-of-26 passing and was not intercepted.

"(Malepeai) came out and did a hell of a job and Dillon was good on the reads, so when it works, it works," York said.

Mililani opened the scoring with a 16-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard TD run by Gabriel on fourth-and-1. Four plays prior, Gabriel moved the chains with a 18-yard pitch-and-catch to Malepeai on fourth-and-4. The drive took nearly five minutes off the clock.

Leilehua didn't run its first offensive play until the 7:13 mark of the opening quarter and quickly went three-and-out after the Trojans' Mykah Tuiolemotu sacked quarterback Max Nichols for an 8-yard loss on third-and-13.

Five plays after the change of possession, Malepeai scored from 27 yards out after emerging from a mass of bodies to hit pay dirt.

"I was just trying to stay up," Malepeai said. "Usually when you get hit, you try to fall down, but that play I just felt like I had to score; There was no other choice."

Mililani went for two on the ensuing PAT, but Ryan Chang's pass fell incomplete. However, the kickoff bounced the way of the home team.

Damien Santiago's kickoff bounced a Leilehua player and was recovered by the Trojans' Kaine Park at the Mules' 44-yard line. Three plays later, Malepeai dragged a pair of defenders across the goal line on his 19-yard TD run that stretched the lead to 19-0.

Mililani's next possession started at the Leilehua 22. Two plays in, Gabriel escaped the pocket to his left before finding an open Malepeai down the left sideline for a 20-yard scoring strike.

"I just made a readjustment on that play and Dillon made a great pass," Malepeai said.

Damien Santiago's PAT with 1:53 left in the first quarter made it 26-0 lead.

"We came out with a fast start and that's what we preach: fast start, strong finish and the guys came out and played well," York said.

Early in the second quarter, Gabriel hit Reichel Vegas for a 37-yard TD pass and late in the period, Raysen Motoyama capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a 26-yard TD run.

Vegas finished with five receptions for 121 yards — both game-high marks.

Motoyama also scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter that closed out the scoring. He finished with six carries for 78 yards. Jalen Tuivaiave-Olomua added 41 yards on eight rushes and registered 1 1/2 sacks on defense.

Tuiolemotu registered three of Mililani's six sacks of Max Nichols, who was making his first career start.

Nichols completed 13 of his 27 pass attempts for 103 yards and was picked off once.

"I thought Max did the job. He handled it, he limited the turnovers, (but) we gotta protect him and we gotta get the ball out quicker sometimes," Leilehua coach Mark Kurisu said. "The biggest thing was protection. (Mililani) had a real great pass rush."

The Mules were shut out for the second straight week.

Mililani has now won the last six meetings against Leilehua and leads the all-time series, 21-18-1.
