MANOA - Waiakea scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Moanalua, 4-3, in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I state baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.
Four Warriors pitchers combined on a one-hitter to help their team advance to Thursday's quarterfinals against second-seeded Kailua.
Khaden Victorino's RBI single tied the game at 3 and Curren Inouye's sacrifice fly to right scored the go-ahead run for the Warriors.
Devin Midel piched a one-plus inning of relief to pick up the win and Casey Yamauchi inherited the tying run on first, but got the next three outs, including a game-ending double play for the save.
Moanalua took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Tyler Trim in the first inning of Waiakea starter David Nakamura.
Waiakea took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a pinch-hit RBI double by Anthony Benevides Jr. and RBI single by Yamauchi.
But Moanalua regained the lead in the top of the sixth on a pinch-hit two-run single by Bryson Sato. It turned out to be Na Menehune's only hit of the game.
The four Waiakea pitchers were Nakamura (2 innings), Cody HIrata (3-plus innings), Midel (1-plus inning) and Yamauchi (1 inning).
Ryne Oshiro took the loss for Moanalua. He was charged with two runs in two-thirds of an inning.
