KAHALA - The Kalani Falcons (16-10) needed overtime to upended the second seeded Seabury Hall Spartans (20-5), 56-46, in the semifinals of the Hawaii High School Athletics Association Division II Boys Basketball State Championships Thursday night at Kalani gymnasium.

Although the game was at Kalani the Falcons were seeded third and the designated visiting team.

"I think it was only fitting this group of seniors got to play one more time at home," said Kalani head coach Natan Davis. "What I told them before overtime was hooray we got one more period to play at home."

Early on the Spartans used their size on the inside to score while Falcon's sophomore guard Ryan Jacobi kept Kalani close and scored the Falcon's first six points as the Seabury Hall led 7-6. Then at the 2:44 mark of the first quarter Spartan's 6-foot-5 forward Christian Jenkins committed his second foul and was dismissed to the bench. The dynamics of the game shifted as Kalani went on a 6-1 run to end the half and gave the Falcons a 12-8 lead at the end of the first stanza.

Both teams struggle for offense as neither team scored in the double digits in the second frame. Seabury Hall's Jenkins was tagged with his third foul and the Spartans were only able to put up six in the stanza. Then with 1:39 left in the half Kalani's 6-foot Jaemi Harris took over the game with a series of great plays. Harris got a right-handed layup to make the advantage 19-14. Then on the next Seabury Hall possession Harris denied Spartan's guard Cameron Hanisch's shot with an emphatic block. After a failed Falcon possession Harris picked up the loose ball and took it all the way to the hoop to make the halftime score 21-14.

"If anything, I'm just doing what I'm supposed to do," said Harris who finished with eight points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. "As long as I do what the coaches ask me to do and I can make a play then I'm fine."

The Maui Interscholastic League D2 champions responded led by their senior guard Hanisch who scored their first six points of the third quarter to cut into the Falcon lead 25-20 with 5:23 left in the stanza. Then both teams began an offensive exchange as Kalani's senior guard Kappa Nishimura hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and was immediately answered by the Spartan's forward Kama Konohia lay in The Falcon's called a timeout with 4:06 left in the frame and during that timeout and Seabury Hall head coach Scott Prather switched to at 1-3-1 zone defense that would slow down the Falcon's offense enough for the Spartan's to catch up and tie the game with 1:10 in the third quarter at 30 when Seabury Hall's senior guard Chandler Dobson hit a 3-pointer from the right wing.

"Seabury Hall's a good team. We knew they would come back," said coach Davis. "That 1-3-1 zone was something we prepared for but some guys were struggling and some guys were playing well so we had to adjust our personal playing against that 1-3-1 zone."

The Falcons took at 33-30 lead into the fourth quarter, but quickly saw that lead disappear as the Spartans took the lead 34-33 with 6:58 to play on Konohia's baby hook shot. In the fourth quarter, there were four lead changes and two ties as Kalani got the lead back on 5-foot-6 Tre Sumida's drive and lay in. Back-and-forth they went as Konohia scored four more points for Seabury Hall to give them a 38-37 lead with 3:19 in the quarter. Konohia led the Spartans with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sumida hit another 3-pointer to tilt the game into the Kalani's favor 40-38, but Jenkins answered with a layup to tie the game at 40 with 2:20 left in the stanza. Sumida hit his third 3-pointer of the frame to give Kalani a 43-40 lead with 2:01. After suffering a right ankle injury Seabury Hall's Hanisch nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner to tie the game at 1:20 in the fourth quarter. Hanisch finished the game with 11 points, two rebounds, and two steals. Kalani's last attempt by Sumida and Harris' shots went wide and forced an overtime period tied at 43.

It became the Trey Sumida show in overtime as he outscored Seabury hall by himself with five points and recorded the fifth foul on the Spartan's Jenkins to bring his night to end. Jenkins had 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks in the loss as Seabury could not get their offense figured out in the overtime and saw their shot at the D2 crown end.

"We just wanted to go back to states and we want to get that title," said Sumida who finished with 17 points and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. "Our ‘bigs' just battled and we went hard at practice. That's what really prepared us going into these games."

Seabury Hall will take on Honokaa in the D2 third place game at 3:00 p.m. Kalani will look for their first ever state title in their third D2 championship appearance against Saint Francis at 5:00 p.m. both games are Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
