Seabury Hall used a strong defensive effort to defeat Hawaii Prep, 47-25, in the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Division II state tournament at Saint Francis' Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The Spartans, who were the state runner-up from a season ago, held Ka Makani to 7-for-26 shooting (26.9 percent from the field) to advance to the semifinals to meet Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II champion Kalani Thursday night at the Falcons' gym.

Seabury Hall's defense was evident early on as it was able to jump out to a 30-7 halftime lead.

Kama Konohia had 11 points and Christian Jenkins and Cameron Hanisch each added nine points to lead the Spartans.

Umi Kealoha led Ka Makani with six points.
