Maryknoll improves to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings after pulling away from Iolani, 50-40 at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium on Monday night.

"This week puts us in the bird's nest and every league game is going to be like this," said Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado.

The Lady Spartans beat the Raiders nine days ago by eight, 60-52.

Isabella Cravens scored 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots. Kamalu Kamakawiwoole added 11 points and Rhianne Omori contributed eight points and three assists.

Skylar Nakata and Camy Aguinaldo each scored 15 points and combined for six 3-pointers to lead the Raiders (1-2 ILH).

The Lady Spartans showed a 2-3 zone and then a 1-3-1 zone to slow down the Raiders for most of the night.

"That zone is designed to take care of the 3-point line. We're still not there in terms of understanding on how to run it. It's designed to stay on the 3-point line and once it comes inside, we let Bella (Cravens) handle it," said Furtado.

"They have been playing zone against us ever since last year. We were ready for it, but they're so long and we're small and it's difficult to get the ball moving as quickly as we want, but we can do a better job," said Iolani coach Dean Young.

Chayse Milne and Kodee Viena each hit 3's and Maryknoll jumped out to an 8-0 run in the fourth to make it, 37-28 after Omori's jumper and Furtado called a full timeout.

The Raiders answered with a 7-0 run to bring themselves within two. Nakata hit a 3 from the left corner and coach Furtado was whistled for a technical foul at the 5:39 mark. Aguinaldo hit one of the two technical free throws and Nakata added another 3-pointer and Iolani called time at 4:54.

"We had a nine point lead. Kamalu drives the ball baseline and gets bumped and we get no call. I asked for the ref to call a foul and he T's me up," said Furtado.

The Lady Spartans pulled away for good after shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:27 of the game. Aguinaldo shot 6-for-11 from the free throw line in the quarter.

Aguinaldo hit all three of her 3's in the first quarter to give Iolani a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. Iolani shot 3 of 13 from behind the arc in the first half and finished 6 of 25 for the game.

"I don't know how we leave Camy open for the first three. We have the talent and pieces, but we need to get smarter. Once they can do that it's a done deal," said Furtado.

The Raiders took advantage of a poor shooting quarter from the Lady Spartans, who shot 1-for-12 from the field and held a three point lead, 19-16 going into halftime.

"We had better ball movement in this game than the first game. When we get the ball in the middle, it opens up for us, but we have to find the right girl. Everyone has to move together and slide into position," said Young.

Maryknoll went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter and held a 27-23 lead after Kamakawiwoole's 3-pointer. Kellie Okamura scored all four of her points off of good ball movement and Nakata drained a 3-pointer near the top to bring Iolani within one, 29-28 going into the fourth.

"We have to continuously need to work on the making the extra pass," said Young.

Both teams will participate in the Iolani Classic starting Thursday. Maryknoll will play Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) on Dec. 8 and they resume ILH play on Dec. 13 against Sacred Hearts.

"We prepare for our league first. Every time we play Iolani it's stressful because they have the ability to hit 3's. We're going to do the best we can and come back next week," said Furtado.

The Raiders will host Punahou (1-1 ILH) on Tuesday, Dec. 6 and will open classic play against Salesian (Richmond, Calif.) on Dec. 8.

"Tomorrow's a big game for us to keep our position in the ILH. The Classic is a fun opportunity to test ourselves against Mainland competition," said Young.

The Raiders and Lady Spartans will meet for the third time on Jan. 12 at Maryknoll's Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium at 6 pm.
