MAKIKI — Thanksgiving sales may be over, but that didn't stop the Campbell Sabers from getting whatever they wanted Monday night.
Campbell recorded 22 steals and saw three players score in double figures to cruise by host Roosevelt for 64-29 preseason win.
"We work on defense a lot in practice," said junior guard Gieani Balino, who had a game-high 18 points with six steals. "In the beginning of practices we work on breaking on the ball and it really pays off in the games."
Center Jasianna Ah Nee Green posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds with three blocks and reserve Chasstiny Balagso hustled for 11 points, six steals and five boards to round out the Sabers' top scorers.
It was a tough night for the Rough Riders as Campbell forced them into 32 turnovers and held them to just nine made shots on 39 attempts (23.1 percent shooting). On the other hand, the Sabers were able to convert on 28 of their 64 shot attempts for a 43.8 percent clip.
Roosevelt first-year coach Chad Kaihe, who filled the coaching vacancy in October, said that his team only returns two players from a year ago. To compensate for his team's youth on the offensive side of the ball, the Rough Riders will look to push tempo to get some easy baskets this season.
However, that strategy played into the visitors' hands as eight different Campbell players were able to come away with steals in the blowout victory.
Campbell coach Summer Aona said that the high volume of steals was a result of her team reacting to what the Rough Riders wanted to do.
"I'm not really telling them when to (go for the ball), I just want them to read what's going on," she said. "What's kind of good is that they've been playing together for a long time, so you can see their chemistry a little bit. They get to dictate when they set the traps, dictate when they go for steals."
The Sabers never trailed in the contest as they were able to jump out to an early 9-0 lead. Twelve first quarter turnovers by the Rough Riders helped Campbell take a 17-3 lead after the opening period.
Campbell held a 36-10 lead at the break and led by as many as 38 points in the second half.
If there was a positive in the Rough Riders' outing, it was in their effort. Roosevelt had 16 total offensive rebounds to give itself some second chance opportunities, which led to more free throw attempts than Campbell (26 to 15).
"The girls fight," said Kaihe. "Like any other Roosevelt team of the past, they known for their scrappiness, they're scrappy. The girls give me 100 percent effort, so that was a positive."
Haven Gabriel and Sunshine Vicente each had 10 points to lead Roosevelt in the loss.
Campbell will participate in the Ka Makani Girls Basketball Tip-Off Classic at Hawaii Prep on Hawaii Island over the weekend before the Oahu Interscholastic Association season starts up next week.
