EWA BEACH — The luster of last week's league championship did not last long for Waialua.
Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Damien dominated Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Waialua, 40-0, Friday night in the opening round of the First Hawaiian Bank Division II tournament at Campbell.
The Monarchs (7-2) will travel to top-seeded Kapaa in a Saturday semifinal at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue.
Quarterback Marcus Faufata-Pedrina passed for two touchdowns on 8-of-9 passing for 126 yards and rushed for another for Damien. Justice White led all rushers with 101 yards on nine carries, including a 29-yard TD run. Deacon Kapea had 88 yards rushing on 12 attempts and a 1-yard TD run.
"It's good to get past the first round," Faufata-Pedrina said. "Our goal is to be 1-0 each week. It's just a step in the direction we want to go. We're not done yet, We want to go to the state championship."
Kapea's TD run set off the 35-point differential running clock with 8:14 left in the third quarter.
"I was happy about how the kids came out and played having not played for three weeks," Damien coach Eddie Klaneski said. "Our boys were fired up, real hungry to get going on the field. They did a great job responding to everything Waialua did. We prepared them really well and they executed the game plan to a T. We made mistakes here and there, but at the end of the day, we had fewer mistakes and that's why we won the game tonight."
Waialua (7-3), coming off a thrilling 36-35 win against Waipahu for the OIA D2 championship, went down hard. The Monarchs outgained the Bulldogs, 350 yards to 44. The Bulldogs, making their state debut, were still banged up having played a week ago.
"They're a disciplined team," Waialua coach Lincoln Barit said. "It made it tough (for us), the three weeks rest. It would've been nice to have the bye, but that's how the poker game goes. The luck of the draw."
The Bulldogs were without WR Darin Valmoja-Khleang and RB/DL Risein Campbell, as both sustained injuries.
It was all Damien in the first half as Faufata-Pedrina passed for two TDs and ran in another to build a 27-0 lead.
The Monarchs got on the board toward the end of the first quarter on a 22-yard TD pass from Faufata to Justice White on a swing-out pass to the right. Kaimana Cameron's PAT gave Damien a 7-0 lead with 3:55 on the clock.
Damien scored on its next series just before the half on Faufata's 1-yard sneak to make I 14-0 with 33 seconds left in the first.
Damien's Dylan Tapat intercepted a pass off Tevesi Toia at Waialua's 29. White didn't wait long to find the end zone, scoring on a 29-yard run. The PAT missed to keep the score, 20-0 with 7:56 in the second quarter.
Later, an interception by Cameron set up Damien's fourth TD of the half, a 32-yard TD pass from Faufata to Shaun Apiki to make it 27-0 with 4:37 in the half.
After Kapea's TD set the running clock, the Monarchs capped their scoring with Domenic Arecchi's 15-yard TD run with 2:44 in the third quarter.
"They sit back a little bit and we were able to get some under routes," Faufata said. "Our running game was able to get going. But hats off to (Waialua); they made it so far and they have some great history at their school."
On the defensive side, Damien did not do anything exotic, basically rushing four, yet came up with four interceptions (Tapat, Scott Lam, Soren Wong and Kaimana Cameron).
"We felt they were going to have hard time blocking our front because we have so much speed up there," Klaneski said. "The main thing was to keep that quarterback (Tavesi Toia) contained and have him throw the ball. We didn't want him scrambling."
The Monarchs will face a Kapaa team that is known for its defense. Kapaa had strung 11 consecutive KIF shutouts dating to 2014.
"We're glad to get this win here and we're back to the drawing board tonight," Klaneski said. "We're going to make sure we get these guys prepared. They have a tough defense. They're a tournament-veteran team. They've been there and they're going to have the upper hand playing on their field so we have to get our guy prepared for them. It's going to be a battle."
