The team from the West side made history Thursday night.

Waianae defeated Roosevelt in straight sets in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II championship match to capture its first-ever league title at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium.

The Seariders saw four players finish with six or more kills to sweep the Rough Riders, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19, to improve to 9-3 on the season.

"Awesome, awesome, the girls deserved it," said Waianae coach Wilhelm Wagner.

It was also Waianae's best season in recent years as it tripled its win total from a disappointing 2015 season.

"Last year, it was just all the beginning for us," said junior Tayzia Pakele, who had a match-high nine kills with nine digs in the win. "We were a young team back then, and we didn't know the (game really well), but now we do. This means a lot to us because we took OIA and made history today."

Enee Tiolu followed Pakele with seven kills and helped stabilize the back row with a match-high 16 digs and junior middles Jasmine Fonoti and Kamilla Marinas each had six kills to round out the Seariders' kill leaders. Tihani Evangelista and Acazia Tolentino also had kills for the Waianae attack.

The Seariders also dug up a lot of the Rough Riders swings and held them to 12 kills while racking up 72 digs.

"We just had to stay on our toes," said Pakele. "Even though we made mistakes, we would just shake it off."

The Rough Riders did not do themselves any favors in the contest as well. Roosevelt committed 32 hitting errors, six ball-handling errors, four service errors and one net violation in the match.

"Yeah, I was surprised at how many errors we had," said Roosevelt coach Puna Velasco. "But credit to Waianae. They pressed the issue and forced us into a lot of errors as well. They did an excellent job, Waianae played a really great game. Waianae deserved it tonight, they outplayed us, hands down."

Roosevelt senior outside hitter Teulia Faasavalu had four kills, one block and 12 digs, and sophomore Vanessa Colling had nine digs, six assists, two aces and two kills to lead the Rough Riders in the loss.

The Rough Riders scored the first point of the match, but found themselves in an early hole as a Pakele kill and four straight hitting errors gave Waianae a 5-1 lead.

Roosevelt battled back to make it 9-7 after a Sierra Sagucio kill before the Seariders took firm control of the set and made it a 22-9 game. Waianae cruised to win game one, 25-15.

The second set was a bit more competitive, at least for the early stages. Roosevelt was able to take leads of 7-5, 9-7, 11-9 before mistakes came around. The Rough Riders could never fully recover down the stretch and Waianae was able to close out the match in three sets.

"We just didn't show up," said Velasco. "The first game I think we were overly excited, second and third game we just couldn't shake it off."
