EWA BEACH – Youth shall be served at Campbell.

Freshman Jaysia Kalaola matched a season-high four aces and had three kills to help the host Sabers sweep Pearl City, 25-6, 25-19, Thursday night in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls' volleyball.

It was a big win for the Sabers (3-1), who pulled into a tie for second in the West with Leilehua (3-1) and sets up Tuesday's crucial match at first-place Mililani (4-0).

"I had a big group of seniors that left (after) last year," Sabers' second-year coach Tracie Huddy-Balino said. "Now, I have a big bunch of young girls and I kept sophomores and freshmen this year."

Among them are Kalaola, a 5-foot-8 middle and sophomore Jordan Skief, a 6-1 middle/opposite to give the Sabers an imposing front line. Kalaola also had a block and block assist. Skief also had three kills plus a block assist. Other contributors were juniors Gieani Balino and Shayla Limatoc, each with three kills. Senior Keisha Schutte added two kills.

The Sabers dominated the first set with deft serving, not with just two aces apiece by Kalaola and senior Sala Timoteo, who served the final seven points to close out the set. The Chargers had difficulty getting off good passes to set up any sort of attack.

"Campbell played a really good game," Pearl City coach Brian Camello said. "They put us in a lot of trouble off the serve. We couldn't get any rhythm offensively. They played well. We didn't bring our best game today."

Campbell got off to an inauspicious start in the second set on Balino's service error. But Limatoc's kill for sideout brought Kalaola to serve seven consecutive points, including two aces to give the Sabers an 8-1 lead.

"I just try to stay calm," Kalaola said of serving. "When I toss the ball, I make sure it stays in front of me."

The Sabers went up 17-6 before the Chargers reeled off eight unanswered points behind Lexxus Enos serving to pull within three. The Sabers opened their lead to 20-15, only to see the Chargers pulled to within three again at 20-17. But the Sabers were able to pull away again and match point came on a Pearl City service error.

Although a freshman, Kalaola has been making an impact.

"First of all, attitude," Huddy-Balino said. "Awesome, just the smarts of the game. She's a club player, so she's pretty familiar with running middles and not afraid to attacking middle. There's just little things she needs to work on but that's only because she's young, but that I think we can instill in her. She's coming around."
