Due to weather, it's MNF in OIA

The weather, labor disputes, terrorism, power outages, World War II and a president's assassination forced either postponements or cancellations of prep football games in Hawaii over the years.

The threat of Tropical Storm Lester forced Oahu games set for Saturday created tonight's special edition of Monday night football at Aloha Stadium and John Kauinana Stadium. Waipahu and Roosevelt will play at 4 p.m. at the Stadium with Farrington and Leilehua to follow. Kapolei will travel to Mililani at Kauinana with the JV starting at 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

The Kaimuki-Faith Lutheran game set for Saturday was played on Sunday. Games on the Big Island and Maui were all postponed.

Here are other times games were canceled or postponed:

2016 - A power outage canceled the Saint Louis at Mililani nonleague game on Aug. 6 after one quarter of play because of electrical issues at John Kauinana Stadium. Saint Louis led 7-0.

2014 - Threat of Hurricane Iselle forces cancelation or postponement of non-league games the weekend of Aug. 8-9.

2001 - Terrorism on U.S. soil Tuesday, Sept. 11, causes postponement of regular season games statewide the weekend of Sept. 14-15. Games are made up later in the season, but shortens OIA tournament by one tier. Instead of cutting the front end of the tournament, the back side was. The tournament ended at the semifinals, so there were co-champions.

1992 - Hurricane Iniki, on a south-westerly track, makes a sudden right turn north on the morning of Friday, Sept. 11. Games were postponed that morning. The OIA and ILH were able to makeup the games, but Kauai, the heaviest hit of all the islands sustained such severe damage to facilities, plus more than a month without electricity, lost a third of the six-game KIF football season. KIF champion Waimea withdrew from the then-Neighbor Island Football Championships. Waimea, though, was invited to play at Westlake (Calif.) High as a goodwill gesture by the Mainland school and community. Maui was not affected because it happened to have a league-wide bye. For whatever reason, a game at Hilo (vs. Honokaa) was the only BIIF game canceled.

1979 - United Public Workers (custodial staff for public schools) strike led to two weekends (Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 2-3) of postponements for the BIIF, KIF and MIL and one weekend for the OIA (Nov. 2-3). Games were made up. The ILH, composed of private schools, was not affected. (A public school teachers strike in 2001 affected spring sports schedules that consequently shortened some state tournaments.)

1963 - President John F. Kennedy's assassination on Friday, Nov. 22, postposed games that weekend for the ILH, ROIA, BIIF and MIL. The KIF season had already concluded. That weekend was supposed to be the final regular-season games. Instead, the games were made up the following week, Thanksgiving weekend, thus canceling the traditional Turkey Day doubleheader for ILH teams at Honolulu Stadium.

1942 - World War II cancels the Rural Oahu Secondary Schools season. Waipahu continues to play independently against Ben Parker and Kahuku, but Waialua and Leilehua did not participate. Waipahu also played against some ILH teams.

The Kauai Interscholastic Federation, largely to its three-round schedule since 1969, leads the state in terms of games played against each other.

Punahou and Kamehameha, being among the oldest schools in the state, is the longest running having started in 1903. But the two also have benefitted by playing each other more than once a season. Since 1970, the ILH has played a double-round format.

Noticeably missing are teams from the BIIF and OIA. The BIIF is relatively new having been established in 1956. The OIA has generally been a one-round league. The only time it played two rounds was between 1951 and 1958.

Also, the OIA has changed scheduling formats over the years. Kahuku, Leilehua, Waialua, Castle (Ben Parker) and Waipahu are original members of the league, but through expansion over the years, the teams were divided by geography (East and West) and strength (Red, White and Blue in the 1990s, as well as Divisions I and II).

The Iolani-Damien rivalry just fell out of the top 10 and will likely stay that way as long as they remain in opposite divisions in their league.
