Farrington-Kamehameha scrimmage notes

KAMEHAMEHA HEIGHTS—In the battle for Kalihi, Farrington traveled up the mountain to take on Kamehameha-Kapalama in a controlled scrimmage at Kunuiakea Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Observations:

7-on-7: To start the scrimmage, the field was divided into three sections: Kamehameha's offense went against Farrington's defense going toward the makai end zone. At midfield, o-line and d-linemen competed in one-on-one drills. Farrington's offense went against the Kamehameha defense facing the mauka end zone.

11-on-11: Bishop Rapoza started the Govs' offensive series at quarterback. The first two drives came up empty-handed, and Rapoza was picked off to end the third series. On Farrington's fourth offensive drive, they marched 40 yards on eight plays capped by Challen Faamatau's 1-yard touchdown.

Thomas "Boogie" Yam started Kamehameha's offensive series and is back from a season-ending injury he suffered last year against Saint Louis. He was picked off, which was returned for a 73-yard touchdown by the Govs. Farrington's defense was tough as they forced another turnover, this time a fumble near the 16-yard line. Kamehameha scored on their fourth drive on a 5-yard rushing touchdown.

When the Govs came back on offense, Justin Uahinui was in at quarterback. He threw a deep ball intended for Kingston Moses-Sanchez in the end zone, but it was broken up at the last minute by a Warriors' defender. Faamatau added his second rushing touchdown to end the series. The Govs turned it over after Kamehameha recovered a fumble near the 20. Uahinui threw a 26-yard touchdown, but was intercepted on the next series. He managed to throw a 3-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-5.

Farrington:

-Challen Faamatau is still the number one tailback for Farrington, but there were other players who got carries that show promise in the back field

-Bishop Rapoza or Justin Uahinui? Rapoza looked a little shaky to start off his offensive series, but settled down as the game went along. Uahinui took a shot to the end zone on the first play of his series, but it was broken up at the last minute. Both QBs each had an interception and Uahinui had two passing touchdowns. It's up to Coach Okimoto who he wants to go with, but for now, why not play both to keep opposing defenses on their toes?

-Kingston Moses-Sanchez is still a deep threat for the Govs passing attack, however, overall the timing and route running for the receivers needs work.

-Defensive line was active, tipping a pass at the line, getting a sack, a fumble recovery and hurried Yam on some plays.

Kamehameha:

-Thomas Yam is back and looks to be this year's starter. They don't have a deep threat like they had with All-Hawaii receiver Kumoku Noa, so they really need to develop chemistry and better timing.

-Run game might be the Warriors' offensive strength as they had some good runs here and there. However, there were turnovers like bad exchanges and had two lost fumbles in the red zone.

-Their first two offensive series resulted in an interception an lost fumble.

-The Warriors found success on a screen play that travelled 18 yards and were able to score on that possession on a 5-yard rushing touchdown
