Distinguished Athlete Award finalists announced




ScoringLive will be honoring the athletic achievements of nearly 20 student athletes at the third annual Distinguished Athlete Awards, presented by the Great Aloha Run, on Sunday, May 22 at the Manoa Grand Ballroom at an invitation-only banquet.

Three male and three female student athletes were selected for outstanding performance in a single sport this year, from which an overall winner will be chosen.

The finalists for Distinguished Male Athlete of the Year are:

Kaeo Kruse, Kamehameha cross country — won second straight individual state title in a state-meet three-mile record of 15 minutes, 22.23 seconds; also won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter run at state track meet; owns state championship meet record in 3,000 and broke four-minute mark in 1,500 this season.

Aukai Lileikis, Punahou swimming — won four gold medals at state meet in 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and as a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams; owns state championship meet records in 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

Vavae Malepeai, Mililani football — led state with 1,944 rushing yards and 34 total touchdowns; All-Hawaii Division I Offensive Player of the Year; all-time state leader in rushing yards and touchdowns; Three-time All-Hawaii First Team selection; was selected to U.S. Army All-American Game and Nike's "The Opening."

The finalists for Distinguished Female Athlete of the Year are:

Teshya Alo, Kamehameha wrestling — won the 132-pound state title for her fourth straight individual crown; also won 139-pound state judo title, the second of her career; four-time ILH female wrestler of the year; former Cadet World Champion; selected by ASICS as National High School Girls Wrestling of the Year as a junior in 2015.

Chanelle Molina, Konawaena basketball — led team to second straight Division I state title; three-time BIIF Player of the Year in basketball, two-time league POY in volleyball; three-time All-Hawaii D1 Player of the Year; three-time Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year; Fifth-Team All-American selection by Max Preps.

Emma Taylor, Hawaii Prep track and field — won fourth consecutive gold in 100-meter hurdles and third straight in 300-meter hurdles at state track meet; helped Ka Makani to back-to-back runner-up finishes as a team; also a four-year member of soccer team that won four straight BIIF league titles and three consecutive state championships.

Also being honored at the ceremony will be the ScoringLive All-Hawaii Players of the Year in Football, Girls and Boys Basketball, Girls and Boys Soccer, Baseball and Softball, as well as the Pizza Hut Newcomer awardees.

Two teams will be recognized as the recipients of the Life matters Award and will receive a $1,000 check toward their school's athletic department from HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union.
