Sabers' Alo leads weekly top performers

Female Athlete of the Week: Jocelyn Alo, Campbell softball
Hard work, persistence and some patience paid off for Jocelyn Alo.

The Campbell junior catcher had her best single-game performance in the biggest game of the season.

Alo slugged a home run and a triple to drive in four runs to lead the Sabers to their second straight Division I state crown with Friday's 12-2 win over Kapolei in the title game of the DataHouse/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The 5-foot-8 right-handed Alo also scored three runs and drew a walk in the win. She went to the opposite field with both of her extra-base hits. Alo belted a 1-1 pitch over the right centerfield fence for a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.

"I think that pretty much set the tone," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "The girls followed up. They saw what was going on and they saw her hit that ball and the girls feed off of that."

Alo, who drew a four pitch walk in the third and came home on an error, brought in two more runs in the fourth inning, when she lined a 3-1 offering to right field for a triple. She scored her third run of the game on a ground out, which gave the Sabers an 8-0 lead.

"She's usually so far off the plate and everybody was pitching her outside, but she's a smart athlete and realizing that in the state tournament she kind of moved (in) a lot toward the plate and that outside pitch became down the middle or right off the plate," Hermosura said. "If you make a mistake pitch against her, she'll either hit a hard liner to you or hit it out and take it somewhere deep."

It wasn't just in the title game that Alo shined. Of her 14 plate appearances in Campbell's four state-tournament games, Alo reached base 12 times.

After driving in a pair of runs in a 15-0 opening-round trouncing of Kealakehe Tuesday, Alo unleashed her wrath on Kamehameha with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a mammoth solo homer to lead off the top of the seventh inning.

As a sophomore last year, Alo won the 184-pound state wrestling championship at Kahuku. When her family moved to the Ewa plain, Alo transitioned seamlessly into the Sabers' starter behind the plate and No. 3 batter.

"It's hard to put words together to describe her because she's just a well-schooled student of the game and she's a great student in school and brings a lot of leadership to our team," Hermosura said. "She a fast leaner and she feels the pitcher, knows what they can do and communicates well with me and the rest of the team."

Alo, who shared Oahu Interscholastic Association co-Red East Player of Year honors as a freshman in 2014 and is verbally committed to play at the University of California, Berkeley, has been forced to be very selective at the plate with her reputation preceding her.

"When we first met, knowing her background I told her that, ‘Everybody knows you in the state and nobody is going to give you something to put the barrel of the bat on the ball. They're all going to pitch you outside or all high and they rather walk you than see you drive in runs or hit a triple, double or home run and you will have to make adjustments on your own,' and that's what she's done," Hermosura said.

For the tournament, Alo went 7 for 9 (.778) at the plate with eight RBI, six runs scored and five walks. She had 16 total bases in four games and was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

"It's a team effort, like anything else and Jocelyn will be the first to tell you it takes everybody," Hermosura said. "That's one good about her is that she understands that. We had some games where she didn't hit well, but she played the other side of the dollar and played good defense. I always tell my pitchers that the catchers run the tempo of the game and Jocelyn does that real well."

Alo finished the season with a Division I-best 30 hits in 52 at-bats, for an astronomical batting average of .577. She also led the state in doubles (11) and had six home runs, which tied her for the third most. Alo also drive in 20 runs, drew 15 walks and scored 13 times on the season.

Campbell finished the year at 18-1. It was their third state title, all coming since 2010 under Hermosura.
