Male Athlete of the Week: Chayce Akaka, Baldwin baseballIt didn't take Chayce Akaka very long to make his presence felt on the Baldwin baseball team.
Akaka won the starting job at third base as a freshman last year and was a stalwart at the hot corner for the Bears en route to their first state title in 21 years and fifth overall this season.
The 5-foot-11 Akaka was a key contributor for Baldwin in last week's run through the Wally Yonamine Foundation/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Baseball State Championships. He batted .500 (5 for 10) in wins over Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division foes Waipahu, Campbell and Pearl City on consecutive nights.
"He came up with some key hits; He put the ball in play," Bears coach Jon Viela said. "All of the hits weren't shots or pea rods, but as a lefty being that quick, he found ways to get on and managed to get his hits here and there."
Akaka opened the tournament by batting 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI in Thursday's 7-1 quarterfinal win over Waipahu. He also drew a walk and stole a base in the game. In Friday's 3-2 come-from-behind semifinal win over defending champion Campbell, Akaka was 0 for 4, but reached base on an error and came around to score. In Saturday's title game, Akaka reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances. He batted 3 for 3 with a walk in the 5-1 win over the Chargers.
All of Akaka's hits in the tournament were singles.
"He's hit in the two-spot almost all year," Viela said of Akaka. "He's bunted a little bit to get on, but he's a typical No. 2 batter, maybe stretching it to a leadoff guy. I think potentially next year he could be a good leadoff batter."
Viela said Akaka's athleticism, along with his work ethic, have fueled his success.
"He works hard, he's a good listener, so he'll do what we ask him to do and he's just a good, all-around person and when you have that kind of talent, I would like to believe that he would turn out to be a very good athlete and a baseball player," Viela said. "The kid is very athletic, but he also works very hard."
Akaka, who bats left and throws right, was surrounded by a trio of seniors in the Bears' batting order in leadoff hitter Haloa Dudoit, No. 3 hitter Nawai Ah Yen and clean-up batter Kawena Alo-Kaonohi.
"He's right in the middle of those three seniors," Viela said. "Talent-wise, he's one of the better ones. He's right there with Dudoit and Alo-Kaonohi guys."
Viela noted that Akaka, a three-sport athlete, got a late start to the baseball season. Akaka is the starting quarterback on the football team in the fall and a forward on the basketball team in the winter.
"He missed part of the preseason, but that was about it," Viela said. "I think the expectation he has of himself is that he'll always get better with as athletic as he is and I don't think he disappointed anybody this year."
Viela said the reception he and the team have received in school and around town have been tremendous in the days since the championship game.
"It's been surreal I think for everybody," Viela said. "The talk around town has created a little bit of a reality of us winning, so it's something that is special for the boys, but I don't think the reality of it has sunk in yet. I'm sure it will eventually. Some of them, I don't think they even know how big this is."
It also marked the final game for Viela as Bears' coach. The long-time health and physical education teacher and assistant athletic director at Baldwin will become the AD at Kamehameha-Maui effective June 1.
Female Athlete of the Week: Sienna Ho, Moanalua judoOver the past four years, Sienna Ho has earned the trust and respect of her coaches.
That's why no one was happier for Ho than Moanalua coach Derron Maki this weekend.
Ho, a senior captain, won the 122-pound weight class at the Max Muscle Hawaii/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Judo State Championships Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
"It's pretty good for Sienna because she's never won states and she's had a pretty good career, but just never could win that title, so to win it and seal it with her last match was special for her and the coaches who have been with her throughout her high school career," Maki said. "It was a pretty special moment for all of us."
Ho, who was the top seed in the 16-person bracket, won all four of her matches by ippon (full point). She defeated Mililani's Courtney Gima in an opening-round match, then dispatched Iolani's Taylor Lau in just 35 seconds in a quarterfinal bout before topping Roosevelt's Megan Mena in the semifinal round.
"Most of her matches in that state tournament went pretty quick," Maki said. "I think leading up to (the Oahu Interscholastic Association championships) and the state championships, she was very confident in her training and it really showed in her performance."
In the championship final, Ho threw Punahou's Taryn Ichimura, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu titlist and No. 2 seed, with a left uchimata (inner thigh throw) in just 38 seconds.
"Uchimata had been her signature move, but after a while everybody kind of knew it was coming so over the years we've tried to mix it up with tai-otoshi (body drop)," Maki said. "There came a point where she didn't need to be told what to do and she knew what to do on her own. She started off that match with a taio and the girl tried to defend that and the uchimata came right in."
Ho won her second league championship two weeks after. She played most of the season at the 129-pound division, but dropped a weight class just after the divisional championships.
"Her playing at 129 was our experiment, but we gauged her performance throughout the whole season and we had discussions about it," Maki said. "She was all for going to 122 and we didn't really have a star player there so we let her go. Plus, she's fought at 122 her entire high school career, so I think she's most comfortable at that weight."
Maki said Ho's maturity made it easy to give her some leeway in deciding on a weight class.
"I think as coaches we try to influence a freshman or someone who is not as seasoned to high school judo and give them some guidance on what weight class they can go, but with Sienna, especially her being a season and the fact that she hadn't won a state title yet, we gave her the pick of the weights. If she had said she wanted to play at 139, I would have said go for it, because I trust that maturity that she understands that it's not just about who's a better judo player, but there are other aspects of cutting weights and such that play a big factor."
Ultimately, Maki feels Ho made the right decision to take a crack at the 122-pound bracket.
"I don't think she was a solid 129(-pound player)," Maki said. "She wasn't cutting weight at all so her weight was fluctuating a few pounds under 129. I think it was also the right decision because when we watched her play, she was a lot quicker on her feet and well-adjusted to her weight class. The speed at 122 was right for her strength.
Maki noted that a runner-up finish as a team two seasons ago, along with a third-place showing last year, fueled his team this season.
"I definitely think so," Maki said. "I think that whenever anyone sees some sort of success in front of them or from the year before it sets the bar to achieve. When we placed second with three girls placing, Sienna was part of that. I think that catalyzed the idea of the possibility to be better than just individually, but as a team and I think Sienna — even though she is very quiet — she is very stern and a lot of the girls look up to her because she's serious. We see the type of pace that Sienna sets at practice and that helped our girls at least take third again this year. Two of our runner-ups were freshmen and that's a difficult feat and that's all due to Sienna's leadership."
In a vote of OIA East coaches Monday night, Ho was selected as co-Player of the Year along with Roosevelt sophomore Macy Higa.
