WAILUKU, Maui – A pitchers' duel ended with the winning pitcher scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning in last game of the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I baseball tournament.
Colby Hirano's sinking fly fell just out of the reach of diving left fielder Treston Carter and scored winning pitcher Trestan Nakamura from third base with two out to give No. 5 Pearl City a thrilling 1-0 win against No. 9 Maui Wednesday night at Iron Maehara Stadium.
The Chargers (15-1) advance to Thursday's quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Waiakea at 1:30 p.m.
"When we got in yesterday, we had a real quick team meeting," Pearl City coach Gavin Concepcion said. "We talked about what to expect going into these games. This is exactly what we told them. It's going to be a dogfight to the last. Every team made it here for a reason and they're going to play their best. It comes down to one or two plays here or there. What it is is we have to persevere through the game. These kids did it and the one play that went our way was the deciding factor."
It was a battle of wills between the teams.
Pearl City starting pitcher Trenton Darley pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out five. He had thrown 111 pitched. Nakamura, who started in left field, allowed a hit and a hit batsman in two scoreless frames.
"I can't explain what he did out there," Concepcion said of his starting pitcher. "He just did a great job. When we handed the ball over the Trestan, he continued the same approach, just pounding that strike zone and forcing contact. Just a great job all in all."
Maui starting pitcher Kyle Oshiro allowed two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 scoreless innings. He needed help from center fielder Kingsley Ballao, a left-hander who added 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Third baseman Jyran Lalim was the hard-luck losing pitcher.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Nakamura walked and took second on a wild pitch before Caleb Nishijo walked. Matt Aribal hit a bouncer back to the mound, where Lalim fired to second for the force, but the relay to first was too late for the double play to put runners at the corners. Hirano then lofted a fly to shallow left, but Carter could not come up ball and Nakamura scored the winning run.
"That was a great ball club that we played," Concepcion said of the Sabers. "Maui was spot on on everything. (Maui pitcher Kyle) Oshiro on the mound did a great job. (Micah) Jio at short, the guy's an all-stater. I've seen him for a few summers now. They made every defensive play they could. That last one, they just couldn't come up with it. That was just a great game."
There were a number of defensive gems by each team.
Maui shortstop Micah Jio made some spectacular plays, assisting on six grounders, while displaying his rifle arm.
Pearl City center fielder Matt Yokota had six putouts, including a diving catch and another while chasing down a deep fly.
